Location: Darboy USA | Thought I'd start a thread so we can all see who bags the next 100# dinosaur out of Bago. We did our scouting today, very good clarity on the north end, can see a pop can in 15 fow.
Found some redworms too so it should be all over by 9:00 am next Saturday. Let us know what you're finding and how you do.
Word of caution though, found ice from 7"-17" where we drilled out holes. Wouldn't want to find 5" with my pickup, but should be good by next weekend as long as the snow stays away. Good luck and chuck 'em straight!! |

Location: Neenah, WI | The Payne's Point Hook and Spear Club found ice conditions similar to yours yesterday. Our guys reported 9-14". Our landing will remain closed to trucks but open to ATV's. One word of caution: with thewinds blowing we had nearly whitout conditions. Make sure you know where you are. It's bitter cold today. We don't want to lose anybody.
We think the ice will be at least a foot thick by thursday and then we'll open the landing. We'll bridge the crack, if needed, during the day. We'll put the tree line out as soon as we have enough help.
We found places out from our clubhouse where the crack is PROBABLY healed enough to cross without a bridge. It's very rough, though, so use caution. We'll probably have to smooth it out with one of our V plows. I'll keep you posted.

Location: Darboy USA | Not sure I can answer that besides you need some type of device that is heavy that you drop down into the mud, then when you pull it up the trap doors on the bottom shut and there is mud trapped inside.
Once you get it up you dilute the mud with water and throw it out onto the ice and see if there are any worms in the dig. I'm guessing somebody might know where to get the mud dips, ours is an old one that's been in the family, I know my dad made it by hand, but not sure if he followed some instructions or just came up with the design himself.
Maybe somebody knows where they can be bought?? |

Location: Menasha, WI | I don't spear but I saw a guy out with what appeared to be a telescoping golf-ball retriever with a soup can fastened to the end. Don't know how well it works but he was moving all over taking samples. |

Location: Neenah, WI | As of now there is no need for a bridge. The crack has healed pretty well. We'll need to take a V plow and smoth things out a bit. However, with warming temps it could heave anytime. You can get current info at our clubhouse. There will be people there all day today and tomorrow. I'm working 7-3 today and have off Fri. |

Location: Neenah, WI | Ahhhhh, it's so nice when you little people recognize a true star.
We'll be getting some guys together today and put the tree line out about 4 miles and probably break a road to the Shanty bar on Faro Springs road. We have a bridge ready to go out if needed. Visability seems to vary from cloudy to the south with 6-8' and clearer as you go north with about 13'. The crack out from our clubhouse is safe to cross FOR NOW!!!As temps warm there is a chance that it could heave. If you see us out there be sure to thank the guys. They work hard to provide safe travel for members and non members alike. A 15 buck membership gets you the use of our ramp, a newsletter, a free pig roast in August and use of the clubhouse for parties etc. The money we make is used in part for donations to area volunteer fire depts.,schools, Walleyes for Tomorrow and Sturgeon for Tomorrow.

Location: Monona, WI | Biologists use a device called an Eckman dredge to take benthic samples. I suspect one of these would work great for finding 'red worms' (likely a Chironomid).

| How is the take this year? Is the season closed yet? Where were the better areas? Clear water in the north, or where the fish traditionally are on the southern portion? Did the limits on the upper lakes work? Any great big fish speared? |

Location: Menasha, WI | Here's the totals according to channel 2, WBAY:
Spearers snagged 355 total sturgeon on Lake Winnebago for the opening weekend -- more than 200 females and 141 males, which are still way under the season cap.
It's a lot different on the upriver lakes, where nearly half of the cap for female sturgeons is already caught. About 150 out of the cap of 200 for males have been harvested.
In conversations on the lake, I was told of a 136# fish taken on Poygan and a 111# fish taken from the north end.
I was perch fishing on the north end Saturday and Sunday. There were wall-to-wall shacks out there Saturday morning, but far fewer Sunday morning. I've been told of some areas where they're moving and have been seen but don't want to attract crowds. |

| Just curiously guys, what do you do with the sturgeon after you spear it? I'm assuming the big pigs, you'd probably mount them. Other than that, do you eat them? If so, how? Smoked?
Thanks.
PS, how is the perch fishing? |

Perch fishing has been hit-or-miss. I was on a good pre-dawn bite Saturday from the time I set up at 6:30 'til the sun came up at 7:00. Went back to the same spot very early Sunday morning to get the jump on 'em and only got one. Most fish came on small shiners under a deadstick while jigging a gold pimple tipped with red spikes in an adjacent hole - got a couple jiggin' but most took the minnow. |

Location: Darboy USA | Sturgeon are excellent table fare. I don't think too many get mounted, would be an expensive bill unless it was the new lake record. I've have them deep fried, beer battered, boiled, smoke, and my favorite method is baked in cracker crumbs and dipped in butter. They are excellent tasting in just about any method and the big ones taste just as good as the small ones, probably more mercury in the big girls though!! |

| Thanks guys, sounds like some good stuff. I'm always up for trying new stuff, but I assume I'll never see it on the menu at Waverly. Where does one pick some of this up if I don't spear? Cedar Creek? I know they sell some odd game there! |

| Black eggs means the fish would have spawned this year, and perfect for caviar as jayman said, American Caviar which has a smooth and pleasant flavor with a clean and gentle aftertaste goes for about $20.00 an oz which makes that fish worth about 15,000 dollars! Although the finest I have ever had is belugia which comes from the caspian sea and goes for about $200.00 an oz!
Good Luck

| I had Flying Fish Roe Sushi at Koreana's last week. It was good. Bright copper golden color, it pops when you crunch down on them. Yummy!
Is the Beluga a different strain of Sturgeon than our lake Sturgeon? And does one keep all thse eggs from that 158 lber? Or can they sell them? Is it caviar right from the fish, or do they have to go through some processing other than washing? How do you store them. Certainly, you wouldn't eat 58 lbs worth in a week or two!

| Selling Lake sturgeon caviar is illegal. So the value is meaningless.
Why must people associate everything with a cost? |

| Sorry Shep can't make it, I have a limit of Perch waiting for me under the ice. The younguns have been gettin some biguns. Jayman is right it is illegal to sell Roe (fish eggs). I'm a salesman Jayman and everything in life has a price, It's a hell of a lot easier to convince the wife that I have the potential of bringing home 15 thousand dollars worth of caviar to her when I am justifying my sporting activities and new product (silly me)!
25 perch=50 fillets, [email protected] fries, bread and a mixer or 2 you do the math. thats a few perch dinners.
Good Luck
