| Right after ice out, what types of structure should we look for? Deep holes? Flats? Bends?

| When you say EARLY, I'm assuming prespawn. As you probably know current will play a big factor on where to look. But in general for prespawn, look at the inside bends for fish moving up. Also look for long flats after a deep hole, if the current isn't too swift. Remember stingers are almost a must for prespawn fish.

| so what do you guys think about the water level and spring run? Will there be more water than last year? How much snow has there been up there? |

| I think the levels are gonna be lower, I hear that it's low now. Hopfully the storm we're in now produces plenty of snow. |

| Actually Axl will be speaking on jigging the reefs on Winnebago during the summer for walleye. Ice Breaker 2 will cover walleye fishing on the system from ice out to ice up. The itinerary is posted.
Also, Bill, I applaud anyone willing to stand in front of a group of people and conduct a seminar. Smart people listen to pick up what might be something valuable and others like you sit back and thumb your nose or take silly pot shots at people. Maybe next year we can have YOU do a seminar. Pick a topic, send a picture and please let me know of any credentials you may have. I don't know Axl, I'm looking forward to meeting him and feel confident that he will do a good job March 10th. Please save the spit balls for another day Bill. |

| YES, let the thawing begin!!!! We needed the snow, now if we get the rest of the magic factors to come in to place, water levels could be very good. OR, it could be too much too early and drop throughout the up run. Who knows?? All I know it's my favorite time of year. Great hoops and my best Wolf River fish pictures of the year. I'll have a good one in this Wednesdays Outdoor Gazette, which if you didn't know, is the center section of the Auto Gazette. Location: Appleton wi | Ice out or pre spawn i fish shallow areas sometimes 3-4 ft depending on the area and i usually anchor this time of year. There are areas during prespawn that i also fish 8-10fow. From north of newlondon to south of freemont there are hundred of areas that fish maybe at and its depending on current speed and water depth. With the recent snow fall in the valley and up north things are looking good for the spring run. A slow thaw and more snow wont hurt!

| Question for you guys fishing the river. What is the easiest way to find the clam beds? Do you use underwater cameras or how do you locate them are they in certain areas and always in the same spot? Thank you for your help |

| Ok guys, all this talk is really getting me excited to start fishing, so to keep it goin, I'm pretty new to this, i've fished the run a couple seasons now, and never did extreamly well so anything anyone has to say about locations, techniques, lures, ect... for anytime during the run i'd love to hear about it.

The few times I have found them, it is because my jig pulled one up, then bingo, you hit the gps.

| Gus, for the IL river go to the spot marked on your map called "Clam Beds". Otherwise, you gotta look like the rest of us.....and do what Jim O mentioned. |

| Gus, why are you looking for clambeds? What is so special about clambeds that you have to find them? Is this the only place you can catch walleyes in a river? Anyway, I would think the best way to find them would be to use your sonar to find hard bottom, and then either throw down your camera to verify, or maybe run a crankbait down on some leadcore, and see what is getting snagged on the hooks. Of course you'd have to troll to do this, and trolling isn't allowed everywhere. Most places, yes, but not some. You could possibly feel them with superbraid and a jig?Run a bucket down and see what comes back up with it? Hire a guide on the water you are trying to figure out?
Lots of ways. Most require a bit of patience, creativity, and perserverance. |
