Mercury is trying to get some feedback on limiting the boundaries to Winnebago for the Merc Nats in '08. If anybody has the contact info for Mercury I would appreciate it. They are trying to reduce the mortality percentage and are looking for suggestons. I would like to keep this post very civilized. Lets put our heads together and come up with some ideas so this does not happen. The biggest weights have come from the upper lakes and they are always nice to have in case it blows. Anybody have any thought or ideas?

Here are mine: The fish don't die from the ride on the upper lakes to bago, they die from the ride from Oshkosh to Fon du lac. If guys are fishing the north end of Bago they will lose some fish on a blow day no matter what. The only way around that is to move the location to a middle ground and I don't think that is an option.

The long wait in the lagoon does not help the mortality at all because th water is so warm and you cannot pump any new water in for the last 20 minutes before you weigh in. Those fish need that water after the long run. Any chance they can move the stage closer to the lake??

You can contact me with any comments or thoughts at 920-731-3474 or e-mail [email protected] on the closing of the upper lakes and I will pass comments on to Mercury. You can also contact Dave Van Gorder the Tournament Director. We welcome any comments or suggestions to improve the mortallity rate.

Thanks

I would think that it will be very tough for anyone to comment on the mortality rate of the merc nat. with out having the numbers of dead fish, and the number of fish dead from the first flight, second flight etc... and how many came from up river and how many stayed on bago, ....and how long each team stayed in the line up before weighing in.

In otherwords, with out some stats, it would just be a guess that mortality would go down because you closed the up river lakes. With 300 teams, keeping them spread apart is a good thing as well. at least all the mortality does not come from one area.

The lagoon is a "killer". the water temps in there get high and if you forget the livewell "on" the fish are going to be further stressed.

Spreading out the flights is not a bad idea. Boats can get in and out a lot faster. Maybe moving the stage closer to the lake or the one channel closer to the lake would be better. There always seems to be a lot of boat traffic with the later flights that make it difficult to get to the stage in a "quick" way.

Closing the upper lakes I don't think will make a huge difference. There is a good hike from the "reefs" to Fond du Lac and the majority of your boats are going to travel that far or farther. It's a large stretch of 10-15' of water that gets choppy even with the slightest breeze.

Just ideas, it's a great show and a good tourney. Anything that improves it, in my humble opinion, is a good thing.
