| After getting my feet wet as a co angler this year and getting a feel for what it is all about, I find myself liking this kind of competition.
I think next year I am going to try it as boater, I have enough stuff to be dangerous( Dont tell my wife that I said that  ) and enough fishing knowledge also enough to be dangerous,(fish are in the water)
I know some of you here fish on the local level tournements, is it posssble to get and how does some sponsership work?
I am thinking of the FLW leugue and a local MN state tournement. |

Location: Berlin | The best advice I ever got when I was starting out was "Go as long as you can before pursuing sponsors". Some people will strongly disagree with this. If you stick with the smaller events and by that I mean ANYTHING other then PWT or FLW Tour, it really is not that bad. There has been enough info posted on what sponsors are looking for so I won't get into that, just search the archives. Try going your first year with absolutely nothing on your mind except fishing. This is a VERY tough sport to be consistant in so the less things you have to worry about the better especially the first year. Stick to the smaller events and fish as many tournaments as you can on waters you are familiar with to build your confidence. Try to befriend some veterans and they might just throw you a bone when you need one. Stick to fishing YOUR fish the way you like to fish. If you like to jig fish and you are good at it then try to get fish going jigging first. If you are good at trolling then troll. Don't get caught up in what everybody else is doing. Lastly, DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING ANYBODY TELLS YOU!!!!! I can't tell you how many times I have seen rookies get thown off their plan by believing every thing they hear. Keep in mind there is money on the line and this is just part of the game. Good luck and keep us posted! |

I guess that is what they mean by fish your fish. I would think networking would be first. Meet some folks, make some acqaintences. Get a feel for the bite. Fine tune the programs. Get the local area tuned. When you says homewaters, mean it. Skills, then reputation. Start slow. Work you own "program".

Location: Neenah, WI | I can echo what Rich said. Also, some guys have a sideline job for extra money. Remember, sponsors expect you to do something in return for what they give you. Time is precious, especially to a rookie. The majority of expenses will come from your own pocket. Talk to businesses that you patronize and they know you. See what you can do for them. 50 or a hundred bucks here and there can be a big help. Find another guy in your position and share a room on the road. Eventually you might hook up with 3 or 4 and rent a larger place for less money each. The more cost sharing you can do will be a big help. Good luck, let us know how you're doing. |
