| Hit the water this morning at 5:30 out of Jefferson and I had to chuckle at all the guys tightly grouped at the outer bar.... Picked up 2 small Walleyes of the north end of Garlic and then decided to run across to Stockbridge to get away from the lakeflies... I got a nice 18 as I was letting out my first board, 19 feet of water straight out in front of the Calumet CO landing. I trolled South and caught 15 Whitebass and a few Sheephead running 65 back with #5 Glass Perch Shad raps, so I decided to try deeper and discovered that I had left my fireline sg17's back at home... so I decided to try 105 back with 10#xt.... over the next 3 hours, I caught 30-35 Walleyes running 105 back @ 1.7 mph. Caught a 24, 22, and most others were 14-16 inches with a few dinks in the mix. I found if I ran any faster, I could not get a bite.
Best part of the day came when I had just landed a double and a group in 2 boats stopped to watch and then ran about 500 yards south of me and then trolled right at me. I had to take a sharp left and go around them... just as I was about even with them, I pulled a triple of cookie cutter 17's while they sat looking at me trying to figure out what I was doing..
You won't win any tournaments with this report, but if you get a chance to take your kids out in the next few days, try the East Shore from Calumet Co Park to about 1 mile South of the Stockbridge landing in 18-19 feet of water running #5 Glass Perch Shad Raps @ 1.7 mph.
I tried one rod today with Flickershads, Cabelas shads, Hot and Tots and Little Rippers with no luck...
If you need more information, give me a whistle.

Location: Orland Park, IL | Very nice PS. Yep, thats usually the plan for me and the 6YO. We had some luck running Pipe to Fishermans. We used harnesses in the morning, than cranks later. That Reef Run rip shad worked pretty good. Thought I would get some play from my Deep Jr Thunderstick, but no dice. Time to dust off the hot and tots. | |
