Look at this forecast for today for the inner Saginaw Bay.

NEARSHORE MARINE FORECAST
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DETROIT/PONTIAC MI
401 AM EDT FRI JUN 29 2007
FOR WATERS WITHIN FIVE NAUTICAL MILES OF SHORE

LHZ422-291530-

INNER SAGINAW BAY-
401 AM EDT FRI JUN 29 2007

TODAY
NORTH WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS IN THE MORNING...BECOMING LIGHT
AND VARIABLE. SUNNY. WAVES 1 TO 2 FEET.

Now, we all know (and I've said it a thousand times) that you can add a foot or two onto any N. NW. or NE wind forecast on Saginaw Bay no matter how slight the winds are predicted to be. This has been the case all my life living here on the Saginaw Bay. But this morning was off the charts, even with all the flags hanging straight down on my way to the Marina. How can the people from the National Weather Service not know after all these years that any wind coming from those 3 directions (especially on Saginaw Bay) will produce (or at least sustain for a long period of time) previous waves or build waves way more severe then any they ever predict.

Even though I warned my clients last night and this morning what might happen after yesterdays afternoon blow and todays "Rosey" forecast, we were confronted this morning with 4 to 5 footers within the first 2 miles out, then a few 6's thrown in after that. Oh, I never left the dock. But I could both see with my bino's the FLW league boys getting beat up as they cleared the Channel at Hoyles and then personally heard from half the people who went out then came back in, that my assesment from shore was right on the money. Yet, one of my clients seemed visibly angry, questioned my safety judgment, seemed overly dissapointed in me and I'm sure will not re-book with me for not taking them out and beating the crap out of them in these conditions. Maybe I am getting to soft and careful in my old age.
