Location: Menasha, WI | I am not going to dwell on the past few weeks, because it has been a while since I wrote a report for you all. I will let you know what has been working for me and for others, and will do my best to be as acurrate and upfront as I can be.
Right now we have been trolling the North end of the lake in 16-17 feet of water. We are going at 2.0 MPH and running crankbaits. The best cranks for me seem to be Deep Jr. Thundersticks in any mettalic color. We are running them very close to the bottom at 140 feet back and really slamming the walleyes. We are not running into a lot of sheeps or whitebass either. We are getting a lot of little whitebass when we raise our baits up higher in the water column and change over to #5 Shad Raps or Flicker Shads.
On Friday we had 33 walleyes while trolling and on Saturday I believe we had 11 or so, so it is very hit and miss day to day. I did not get out on the past three days due to some motor issues and also the weather has not been the greatest. I will be out there most of the rest of the week and will bring you a report on this area again next week.
The reef bite has really slowed down for me lately, although I have been trolling mostly, but I would think it should pick up soon. 2007 has been a goofy year so far when it comes to fishing the rocks. One day the fish are stacked up on them and the next day they really seem to dissapear. The perch are starting to finally show up in good numbers, but the size seems to be running on the short side. I did get a report from one of my buddies who had 39 perch and 11 walleyes while dead sticking over the past weekend. They were using small gold hooks tipped with a very small piece of crawler. They 7 walleyes from 18-22 inches while perch fishing. Now this tells me that the walleyes are following these schools of perch and that they are in search of a bigger meal. It may be time to switch over to some larger crankbaits, such as #7 Flicker Shads, #7 Shad Raps or the big Deep Thundersticks. Remember that as the season gets into the dog days of summer the bait fish are growing up as well, and you just may be suprised at what types of baits these walleyes will chase. Why should they chase after a lot of small meals when they can get one big meal and save all the energy.
Winnebago Point on the east shore is doing well for both perch and walleyes under slip bobbers. It seems most people are fishing very close to the bottom on the rocks and doing well here. I have not been over there for a few weeks , but it is definetly on my to do list in the next week or so.
Gehrkes Reef continues to put out its usual fish and there is a lot of boaters here on a daily basis. The action is good but the size is really not all that great.
I had a report come to me that the area in and around Fraction Island was producing well while casting little cleos in the weeds. The numbers were not that great, but the quality was outstanding.
I have seen several boats on Stevens Reef, and after talking to a lot of different boaters they all have asked me where did the walleyes go. I tell them to go trolling, I hope they listen.
There has not been too many boats on Haystack or Mansur Reef and that is because the reefs have really slowed down. I tried to drift over Mansurs the other day, troll over it, and follow contour lines over it and never picked up a fish in 3 hours of any sort. I was determined to spend some time here to learn this reef, and there was noone there, so I figured , Go For It!
I did get one solid report from the New London area this week, and it was that the Big Eddy was producing some nice sized walleyes. Now I do not know what they were using or exactly where they were, but they were anchored and using jigs and crawlers.....FYI
I have not gotten or heard much at all this year about the Garlic Island area and was wondering how a lot of you are doing in this area. This has always been a great place to fish and it seems it is really getting ignored this year, or everyone is hush hush about it. If you fish here, send me a report on how you did, or what is going on. If I hear nothing, I just may have to go on a search and destroy mission, and find out for myself. Any help would be appreciated on this matter.
I know for the next few weeks I will be out in the mud trolling, so feel free to contact me if you need some help or if you have a report for me. I will also make sure to hit a few reefs, to see when the walleyes will be there, but most trolling for me for awhile.
Well that is all I know for know, see you next week with another fishing report.
