| I have a 2000 Tracker Targa 17SC and I was wondering if a 6hp Merc would be enough of a motor to troll with. I've heard that they are a little louder and rattle more since they only have one cylinder, but I was just looking for some input.
Thanks, Jake

| Do you think that having a kicker with only 1 cylinder makes much of a difference in loudness and rattle as opposed to a kicker with 2? I think Yamaha is the only 6hp on the market that has 2 cylinders. I was looking into a Merc 6hp, but now I am wondering if 2 cylinders would be the way to go. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jake

| I run a T8 with obviously 2 cylinders, and a friend of mine has a merc 6 horse 4 stroke which is 3 months old. I have nothing against mercury at all, but I thought his 6 horse was a 2 stroke until I looked at the cover and found the 4 stroke sticker. You have to raise your voice to talk over it, it is that loud. It also does rattle some. It is night and day compared to mine which is like a sewing machine. I've never heard a Yamaha 6 horse though so I cannot comment on that. Just telling you what I know. |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Boy, I have sold many 6hp motors, Mercury, as kickers, and never found them to be as noisy as a 2 stroke. Are ya sure there is oil in it? LOL, Really, the only draw back to a 6 hp is the bracket. The bracket is lightly built as that motor was built for canoes and the like. Go to a 8hp long shaft, 2 cylinders, runs great and a beefy'er bracket. Cost, about 100 bucks more than a 6hp. |

| Yes, the single cylinder vs a double cylinder, will make a BIG difference in noise and rattle in the boat. It's more an annoyance than anything.
Good Luck |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | It may be that a 6hp is more annoying than a twin cylinder 8 hp but it whoops arse over a 2 stroke any freakin' day!! |
