Has anyone else ran into the problem of loosing the red snap weight clips when fighting sheephead? I check to make sure the line is behind the little peg and on the pad. It seems tight but I still loose them.

I've double wrapped them and still lost them. I hardly ever loose one when I'm fighting a Walleye. I started making my own clips for snap weights. They seem to hold nearly as well, and if I loose them it doesn't cost me $4-$5 a pop. Is the common phenomenon?

Ok once again I will refer to the church snap weights I realy like there releases I have actualy snaged them up and broke the line before I was able to pull the release off the line. and an added bonouse you can get a complete set of church snap weights for under $20 at Dunham's

I've personally never had a problem with the OR-16 clips for snap weights and I'm a fireline user.

But if you want a cheap alternative. Use a rubber band and loop the snap around your line and back through the rubber band. Get a fish on, once you get the snap weight up to the boat just grab the weight and break off the rubber band.

Also, make sure the spring is slid forward to the tightest setting as possible. I also have never lost a red snap to a fish.

Black ones, different story.

I have/had the same problem. Here's what I did. I run Beaded Barrel swivels about 3 feet up the line from the end of my main line. I attached a Barrel Swivel to a Norman Speed Clip, then ran it on the O' ring that goes through the snap weight. Then simply attach the Normans to the beaded swivel. It does take away what may be your lucky 30/30 or 50/50 snap weight combination, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me or the walleyes on the Bay this year.

Put a snap swivel on the ring between the snap and the weight. put the snap swivel behind the snap on the line. when you get a fish on. just unsnap the weight and let it slide down to your crawler harness. or put a small bb weight about 2 ft. in front of your crank. never lost a fish this way. I usually don't use snaps on cranks though.

Rookie,

I use the exact same setup. I only use this setup in rough seas otherwise I'm using an inline weight. I can only think of one time where I lost a weight and it was because I was using 2 ounces in 5-6 waves and was not using the releases with the pins in them.

Are you using a super braided line? I just can not figure out how you could still loose this setup when you are wrapping them. It just does not make sense. I have not had to wrap them using mono.

I'm using 10lb XT. I'm starting to think I must have been doing something wrong. I would go several trips without loosing any, then I would loose several in a day. I've only actually lost 1 or 2 when double wrapping. I guess I'll have to test it out again this weekend and take extra time to make sure everything is just so-so and see if it happens again.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Rookie,

I'm a XT 10lb user too. I didn't have a problem until a few weeks ago when I lost two in one morning of fishing. I was on bay and the they were some of those magnum sheepshead. It was frustrating none the less. Add to that they broke harnesses and threw blades too.

Butch,

Which Dunham's did you find the Church snap weights at? Because using the Church releases was my next experiemnt. I switched out all my Off Shore board to use the Church releases. Much easier to use IMHO.
