Subject: Should I? switch all my lines to fireline?

Im looking for opinions that are non bias. We all know human nature is to set yourself in the normal presentation that you have been running for years. but this is something to look at.

Im considering switching all 6 of my walleye rods to fireline, for two reasons. Increased monitoring if the bait is weeded or not tuned properly. and increased bait action. Not to mention the depth charts are better. amoung other good reasons.... ive heard, set the drags lower and run mustad triple grips. and always run a 6ft leader of vanish.

Has anyone switched over 100% fireline? Before i spend the money id like to hear the horror stories, thanks.

I have stuck with the 10lb XT on my trolling rods. So, havent found the need to go to fireline, yet. I do have a couple of reels I may fill with fireline, just in case. In case of what? Not sure yet. So, curious to see the feedback.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing.. Alot of pro's run fireline for the reasons above.
i was thinking of grabbn a 1100yrd spool of crystal. I also think the pros have reels of mono and lead.. besides the hook ripping problem are there any disadvantages????

I have switched all my reels to fireline crystal or power pro. On my finesse rigs I just tie in some vanish. On my trolling and jigging they are straight crystal. I even run fireline crawler harnesses. I don't have any problem with ripping lips, but I never have had my drags set tight. On my leadcore I use power pro backing with a crystal leader. I take back that all my reels are fireline or power pro, my bluegill rod has 4 lb sliver thread excaliber.

All My reels have Fireline, except the Linecounters which have 10lb. Big Game. Wouldn't cast cranks or jig for Eyeballs without it ! C-man

I have Power Pro rigged on some of my line counters for:

river fishing,
if I have to achieve maximum depth,
or long lining without boards.

I will continue to use a co-polymer like Gamma for all other trolling. You WILL loose more big fish while using a super braid. I actually like the forgiveness of the stretch in the line of a good mono or co-polymer. Fishing with am's in tournaments has taught me this valuable lesson. You should also be concerned with the line visibility in clear water like Green Bay. The sensitivity that you gain is lost if you use planer boards. I actually think that stretch is a good thing when using crawler harnesses.

Those who have made the switch use lighter rods, set the drags loose and run mustad triple grips. Seems like a lot of additional work and expense for the proposed benefits.

On the flip side:
Super braids are great in rocky or zebra invested waters where fraying is a concern. Another advantage of using a super braid like Power Pro is actual cost savings. You'll pay more up front but you can use that line for several years. (yes, several). If you start to see a lot of fraying, either cut off or reverse the line so that the stuff that was in back is now in front. If you do switch make sure that your old mono for backup on your reels. You'll prevent slippage and save money.

Now, if you are talking jigging rods or three-waying. That's a different story. I will use nothing but Power Pro for the added sensitivity. I tell people that I can feel a fish fart.

Fireline...I really don't see any reason not to use it. Yes, there is some added expense, (board clips the main expense), but yes rods with soft tips or soft rods with back bone are what you want to use with fire line (most trolling rods fit this bill). When it comes to jigging, I think it becomes more of a personal preference much like the rod they are using. Keep in mind, like Dennis mentioned, many of the suprer braids can be used for multiple years, 3-5 is not out of the norm.

I think the "read" one can get on thier boards with Fireline vs mono is a huge reason to go to it. I've seen 6#'ers on Green Bay just tip a board back and never even pull it out of line (traditional line of 3 boards). If it was mono, How long would that fish suck on the crawler before it would get the crawler and be gone?

One thing about fishing, it's a game of personal preference and everybody does it different. Try some out, if you like it great, if not go back to mono, or try something different. Good Luck
