Lowrance Pro Chris Meyer talks about the new Lowrance HDS sonar, GPS, and the add-on capabilities of the HDS. You can find more information about the new units at the Lowrance website.

Can someone answer this: Can the new HD units be flush mounted?   Would a true 'flush' mount affect performance due to the built-in receiver?  (When I mount one of these units into one of my Rod Racks, the case/screen does not protrude from the carpet. It's almost like mounting it in a cabinet)

Yes they can be flush mounted. The Bezzle on front pops right off with a knife.... If I would have had a knife on me I'd have popped of the bezzels for the interview. As for performance the antenna is mounted on the front for the units to be tilted. Now being inside a cabinet might work and it might not I haven't tried mine inside a electronics locker. If they dont work you will have to move them......

If they don't work in a locker, you can always network with another antenna... FYI my buds antenna is mounted INSIDE of his rod locker and works great...
new tuffy is rumored to arrive next week... I'll get the HDS-8 up and running!

Those videos were awesome!! I looked at the book for my HDS10 and just about went cross eyed. It's the first time I've ever hoped that half the book was in Spanish :-).

Any idea what the ducer for side imaging is going to cost?

Also, me a my fishing buddy both have had (and still have) Lowrance big screens in our boats. We both have also ripped them out of the counsils. What is the best, most stable way to mount these beasts?

Thanks, Adam

When will the Broad band radar be available for purchase? Also when will the Sirius antenna be available?

Well it's mid-April, still no support or software upgrade for Navionics cards. Anyone know the time frame now? When is it expected?

Hello,
I just bought (2) HDS-5 and HDS-5x and I ordered the HDS-7.

My first question, I've been reading that the 7" HDS models have a defective batch where water enters the screen. More details here: http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zerothread/394705-hds-horribly-defec...
I hope I don't get one of these:( It sucks that's there's no solid answer from Lowrance about the leaking units. This question I will be asking Lowrance at the July Show.

2nd question. i have the HDS-5 w/lake insights, I also have the HDS-5x, Can I see the lake insights on my HDS-5x since they're networked via Ethernet connection.

3rd question. Will there be a more detailed manual for using these units, especially about lake insights? or will I have to wait and just ask around the board? I've read the manual like 5 times looking for detail info, but it looks like I get more information about the unit(s) from 3rd parties than from Lowrance. I can't wait for the show in July, I'll have a list of questions for them:) and they can't put me on hold or transfer me to another rep.

thanks again guys for your help,

1st question... hope you make out good... they should replace any no problem...
2nd question... no mapping info cannot be exchanged between units... just general gps info via eth. or nmea...
3rd question... I doubt a manual will be out for insights, its just a mapping add on... like navionics only built in...

I have an HDS-8 it is freaking amazing... had a few hours on it sunday mounted on the dash of the new tuffy...
once I got the settings right, unbelievable... The giant screen is easy to read with multiple pages on the screen... the buttons on the 8 and 10 are super easy to use... The basemap is far better than the older units, I do have a FHS chip i'll be using when I get to some lakes... Navionics is a waste for me, they have little coverage for the places I fish... lotta chit chat about the navionics update, I could care less...
I bought this sonar for one reason, finding deep structure and fish.... This is the one...

iceman, thanks buddy. I think I will return the HDS-7 when it arrives and pick up the HDS-8 instead. I have heard nothing wrong with the HDS-5, 8, 10's units.

Yeah, that's what I thought about exchanging mapping info between units. I have both the HDS5 & HDS5x on my console, and I plan on using the HDS-8 at the bow. I have yet to turn them on, lol. I've been waiting to go to the lake but my truck's in the shop. I don't know if I should wait until I get into the water or just disconnect the sonar(s) and try it at home.

I also plan on adding the LGC-4000 unit, it gets windy sometimes.

I have another question:) is it possible to use the WiFi SD cards? for transferring data from the card via WiFi?

Cool, thanks Kirt. I will look to see if he has one for the new HDS units.

I just got off the phone with one of the Lowrance Technicians.

As for your first question, he hadn't heard of any major issues yet, however, your unit comes with a two year warranty, they will stand behind the product.

Question #2, you are not able to use the ethernet to be able to view the lake insight from one unit to another. Can't be done according to him.

As for question #3, I don't know the answer to that, but I asked the Lowrance tech to answer on here when he has time. So stay tuned and hopefully he'll provide us with that answer.

thanks DeVoe,
no doubt, I know Lowrance will stand by their products, that's why I've bought a total of 10 units in my fishing career. I just prefer to keep my unit on the boat not in the repair shop or to have my credit card temporally charged until the defective unit has been returned. That's why I join forums to read up on peoples experiences, and so far a have heard a few bad reports on defective HDS-7 units, so to avoid the drama (even though Lowrance stands by their products and I have a 2 yr warranty) I would just rather get a model that has only good reviews as far as defectiveness goes. So I will probably get the HDS-8 model instead of the HDS-7 just for a piece of mind, I just rather be fishing not waiting.

Would you know if by having 3 units on my boat I would be able to connect the LCG-4000 to one of the HDS unit's network port, the fuel sensor on the 2nd unit's network port, and the speed sensor on the 3rd unit's network port. this way i can avoid spending money on networking cables and T connectors. The units will be networked via the Ethernet expansion port?

Also to avoid removing the SD card could I use a WiFi SD card. This way I can just pull the info from my card using my wireless laptop.

Any idea what the Side Imaging Unit will look like? how big? where will it mount? is it similar to HB's unit?

Will Lowrance be putting out any PC mapping software that will work in conjunction with Map Insights? and at the same 3-D HD quality or do I just continue to use Mapcreate?

Do you think Lowrance will be making a smaller radar unit for lake use?

thanks again buddy,

Conrad
