| After many years of musky fishing I am returning to my walleye roots. I have a few spinning rods and reels but am looking for suggestions on a rod and reel for jigging.
I want to spend around $250 give or take. What are the qualities I am looking for in a jigging rod? Action? Lightweight, medium, heavy?
I plan on fishing Winnie the 15th - 19th of May with minnows.

| Steve - in spinning rods, I prefer 7' ML fast action sticks. My "go-to" jigging outfits tho are 6' med. action baitcasters. G. Loomis CR722 rods, teamed with Cabela's low profile Prodigy reels (w/flipping switch), filled with Flame green 8lb. Fireline. A baitcaster with a flipping switch, makes minor depth adjuctments a breeze. I can use jigs down to 1/8 oz. (verticle jigging) with no problem. C-man |

| Steve, Honestly, I would go to Gander Mountain and pickup a Im6 or even the Im7 rods for $29 or $39 dollars. For a reels, look at Shimino's in the 50 dallar range. I have a few of each and use them depending on conditions. The 7 footers are nice for long linning 3 rods on Bago, the 6 footers work well for jigging. I also have a dozen expensive G-loomis and Fenwick rod combos, but I like my Gander rods best... and I don't worry about a guest breaking one. Dominic

| The Gander Tournament rods are really nice, as are their reels. I really like my Fig Rig rods. I like to use a 6 1/2' med light for verticle jigging, and a 7' medium for pitching jigs. |

| Thanks guys,
I will definately check out the gander rods. Just had to drop a bunch of cash on a framing nailer so the fishing rod is gonna have to be "value" priced..hehe.
I was wonder what length and action you guys prefer for vertical jigging minnows?

For vertical, I prefer a shorter rod. Something between around 5'9" and 6'3" would be my perference. Medium (M) or medium light (ML) weight, I prefer a medium rod, as it will have more backbone for the hook sets and large fish, I find the medium lights too "whippy" for my liking. You'll want a fast (F) or extra fast (XF) action tip to give you the sensitivity and flexibility to feel the fish without him feeling you on the bite.
I'm currently using a Shimano Crucial CS63MXF, I love the rod, but actually wish it was 3 or 4" shorter a lot of time when I'm strictly going vertical.

Location: Berlin | I use a 7' MH for pitching and vertical jigging. A long rod is a must for vertical jigging if you are using two rods. The longer rods give you more time on the hook set to set the other pole down. I only use a shorter rod if it is windy or I am under a bridge:) The stiffer rod also allows you to fish snaggier areas with less problems. The reel you choose is just as important as the rod. You don't need much line for Vertical Jigging so use a 1000 series or even an ultralight sized reel. The lighter the reel, the better your sensitivity. I like Fenwick HMG AV rods and Shimano Stradic reels. If you look hard enough, you can get that combo for the price you want. |

| I USE SHIMANO COMPRES. GOOD BANG FOR THE BUCK$$$ ANYWHERE FROM 6'6 TO 7'6. I LIKE TO VERTICAL JIG WITH MY 7'6 MED ACTION X-TRA FAST TAPPER. I CAN FEEL FISH ALOT BETTER WITH IT. AS FAR AS REELS.....SHIMANO SYMENTRE ARE AWSUM REELS FOR THE $$$$. I ALSO USE TICA 2500'S 10 B.B.'S VERY SMOOTH AND LIGHT WEIGHT. HOPE THIS HELPS. |

| I know you want lower priced, but check out Kistler rods, www.kistlerrods.com. They are generally known as bass rods, but make a wide variety of spinning and casting rods. I use the medium and medium light spinning for my walleye jig fishing.
They are super light and make fishing all day a breeze.

| For Jigging, I use G-Loomis rods SJR720, 6 ft. 1/32 to 1/4 Ex. fast action, Imx. with a Supreme-Pflueger reel, 8030MG.
I had shimano reels since 86, alot of the bails fail to close. You would not go wrong on this comination for strickly becoming a jigger. Kistler rods are good also. a little more money. Fenwick Techna-AV are good jigging rods. If you can find somebody that jigs heavily and use a rod to see how they feel for ya would help. I like them light, fast action, sensitive, and strength to handle even big fish. With some of the rods and matched up with flourocarbon or braided lines you have limitations on hook set and muscling fish, so be careful. Good Luck on your new investment. |

Rods are expensive! very eye opening when the catalogs showed up this year... So lets help you out...
went to gander mtn. Sat... picked up a gander rod and a rapala rod, both real nice... had 14.99 stickers on them... checked out at 7.99 a piece! I'm a big fan of those rapala rods! check out tose bargain bins!
any 6 to 6-6 med action maybe a light action should get the job done...
I got 3 6ft med action all stars that do everything... from jigging to throwing shad raps... shore fishing, wading, and perch fishing... I've used Daiwa SS whisker reels for 18 years... never miss a beat... very light weight too...
I've bought 4 reels for the misses on ebay the last few years... all daiwa(new) under 35$ on ebay... great reels...
I see some guys selling bass pro extreme spinning rods on ebay for a good price too...
If you want to drop 250 on a combo though, man, lots of choices!

| For the money, the Gander rods are good. Personally, I wouldn't get anything less than an IM7. I have a variety of IM7s, both 6' & 7' in med. light. Used to like a shorter rod for vertical jigging, but now actually prefer the 7'. I believe the characteristics of the longer rod helps me with the presentation and hookset while vertical jigging.
If you want to spend more, I like the 6'9" med. light, extra fast St. Croix Avid. Been vertical jigging with a pair of these the last couple years and really like them.
My opinion is if you don't have unlimited funds, spend as much as you can on the rod & bargain shop for the reel. Have had good luck with Garcias, Mitchells, and Shimanos. Have gotten some real good deals on Garcias and Mitchells through Fishermens Factory Outlet in Spirit Lake, IA. I agree with Rich on a smaller reel. Less weight = increased sensitivity. Don't need as much line capacity for vertical jigging. |
