 Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | The Walleye inland lakes and rivers season opens today 4-26-14 in Michigan, but a lot of these systems farther north are still ice covered. And the ones that are not have mostly the smaller males left in their systems, who stick around long after the bar closes to sweep any girls left off their feet/fins. With a lot of years behind us catching many, many sub legal walleyes along with the keepers, our fishery is starting to produce some impressive average catches now. This big average size happened before back in the mid to late 80's when walleyes main forage was Alewife. The growth rates of Saginaw Bay walleyes back then were accelerated far and above anything else seen on the Great Lakes. This also came with a price, that our walleyes also seemed to die at an earlier age. Being to fat seems to be detrimental in all species. The newer forage base that replaced the Alewife after their collapse, seems to have leveled out the growth rates of our walleyes. So things are now what I'd say are status-quo in our fishery, with a good spread of all ages and sizes across the board. Here's a couple of dandy's caught along with smaller others on the Bay Friday/yesterday, the day before the inland opener. Both were released.
