I have a 1975 25hp Johnson. Today it started lurching as I got up close to plane speed. Once I got up on plane, it still skipped/slipped but not as often nor as forcefully as when it does right in that mid-range as you get close to plane. It feels kind of like a transmission slipping on an automatic. I know it's something in the lower unit, but I'd like to have an idea of what to look for before I start messing around with it. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

back in the day, I had this old elgin 15. Ran great, but there was this rubber bushing that had in indentation on both sides, that fitted a kotter type pin on the drive shaft and another kotter type pin on the prop. It was dried out and starting to rip. It had the same problems you mentioned when getting on plane. Could be that simple.
