Location: Germantown and Land O Lakes, WI		I gave a GPS seminar at my old Jr College yesterday and got a chance to speak with my Zoology Professor, Wayne Schaeffer. He's been working with the Dept of Ministries in Ontario for decades on various Walleye studies and recently he's come across Blue Walleyes. Notice the second picture, the mucous/slime actually comes off the fish blue.

Pretty cool stuff.

Blue walleye used to be more common even in the Great Lakes years ago, but have sense been classified to be virtually extinct in US waters. Canadian waters still have them in numbers. I actually caught a (Blue Pike) on the Pere Marquette River back in 1986 while drop back fishing out of my drift boat for steelhead, and was told that their diet in certain waterways turn them blue. I threw it back thinking it was sick. I'll look for the picture.

The actual "blue" walleye is indeed extinct. Last one being caught in Lake Erie in the 1950s. This was in fact a genetic variant. The fish in question from Ontario carry the "blue" color because of their pigment and mucous. It is unknown what turns them blue. In fact, some walleye have been caught that are both "regular" color and the "blue" on different parts. If you actually caught one on the Pere Marquette, you should have kept it. Nope.

What I caught was a Blue Pike not a walleye. It was a pike and it was blue, honest.

Location: Germantown and Land O Lakes, WI		Dr. Schaeffer spoke about the blue Pike as well, he said that they were mainly found in the Lake Erie system. I don't know if they're still in there in large numbers

We caught a lot of blue walleyes and blue pike in northern Manitoba thru the ice.

Another phase of northern pike was called a "black jack" pike by the locals. It had almost no markings and a blackish look to them. No doubt a scientific explanation. Ours went back down the hole not to science!

Mother Nature is full of surprises!

There is a lake in Northwest Ontario where most of the walleyes are blue.
