I'm permanently retiring my Model 100, so the boy needs a new rifle this year. Last year, there were some good sales around. I think Wally Mart had a Rifle Scope combo for a low price. Any ideas this year?

Probably not looking to spend what an A-bolt is worth. What Caliber? Get a price, and I'll consider it. Thanks.

I think Cavins said somebody had a combo on sale last year. New for like $300-350. I really don't remember. It might have been a Remington. Synthetic stock, and I think a cheaper scope, like Simmons?

Shep,

Wally world usually has Remington model 70 (I think) with a scope for around that price range. Last year they had a 270, a 300 (for a little more), a 30-06 and a few others.

Gotta be the right Wally, as the ones around here don't sell rifles anymore. Too PC here. I thought that was what RangerPat told me last year, the Model 70 Remington. Should be a good on for the boy for a while. Certainly better than the 20 ga with slugs I started with! He used the Model 100 the last two years. He's a crack shot, so I'd like to get him something decent.

I believe Gander has that same Remington combo at a reasonable price.

That 270 is one long range flat shooting gun. That is the gun responsible for more elk kills than any other, and it is small enough for a younger hunter to carry through the woods. My next rifle will be an A Bolt 260 or 270 (they also make them in a short mag now).

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Shep, I'm going to Jon's in Oshkosh today to get a shotgun for a raffle. I'll do some snooping and see what I can find. A .270 is a great choice.

Thanks, guys. I really like shooting my .308's. Great accuracy, and plenty of knock em down. I will be taking a Colorado Elk trip in the future, got all my points, so was looking for something if I really need to reach out and touch one. The boy is nearly as big as me, so I'm not concerned about a smaller rifle for him. hehehe

The model the guys are talking about is the 710, maybe Remington just calls it a 70 now? Anyhow, I've got that gun in the .270 caliber, shoots great and has knocked down some good deer in the last 5 years since I've had it. Comes with a simmons scope 3x9x30, the scope is okay, hard to see the last 10 minutes or shooting light from my experience, so I changed to a Nikon on it.

For the price tag of $310-$330, you can't find a better shooting gun and will group well and is very sufficient for knocking down deer type game.

Savage also makes a model that is similar and comes with a scope, usually around $10 cheaper than the Remington. I don't have any experience so can't speak on how it performs.

The Remington bolt will feel a little "sticky" at first due to the plastic and synthetics used on the action, but after a few rounds it breaks in, plus you can have the kid sit on the couch and work the action while he watches hunting shows on the tube, he he!

In my opinion the savage is a little bit better gun but that is the one I choose over the two. I didn't like the action of the Remington 710. I use my savage for predator hunting on the snow machine chasing hounds so it sees it share of abuse and still shoots straight when called upon but that may have lot more to do with the Leupold that sits on it. Both will do the job, I'd go with the .270 or 06. Lots of ammo choices and easy to find.

Shep I bought my boys Rem 270's when they graduated High School! They love 'em and have killed many deer with them. It is a great gun and will last your boy many many years! Personally I use a Savage Striker in a 300WSM for deer hunting as I am in shotgun territory. 300 yards for a pistol is priceless and so much fun to shoot!
Good Luck

The Savage Striker looks interesting to me as I hunt shot gun also. Where did you purchase your gun from Tyee? I would like to be able to reach out 150 yards at most. Not being a ballistics expert, I'm wondering if there might be smaller yet effective caliper in the Savage Striker line? I did a search and discovered that some of the lesser calipers can hold an extra cartridge which would speed up a second shot if necessary.

Grouse, I think you hit the nail on the head Savage by far is the nicest most accurate rifle for the money due to the way the barrel and reciever are mounted together. With Savage they have a minimal advertising budget so your not paying for the name, you can find these rifles scoped out for around $300 at Dunhams Sporting Goods. I love my old savage 110 in .270. My new love is my TC encore, it is a beatiful rifle, muzzleloader, and shotgun all in one. Dotn let the price of that encore scare you though CVA makes a knock off for less it's called the Optima Elite.

Gilman I bought the 300WSM and it is a handfull, I would recomend a 270 or maybe even the 7mm be sure to get a muzzle break, Mine holds 2 shells although I have never had to take a second shot it is accurate (hit a 8" plate) at 300 yards very consistantly. The 270 would shoot much flatter and not have as much of a kick.

I buy all my guns at Precission Sports in Oshkosh they seem to have the best prices, although the Stricker is no longer made and you might have to look pretty hard to find a complete setup for under a grand. You will need a bipod and a good 2-4 variable scope which makes it a bit on the heavy side. I believe my 300 is slightly heavier than my 7mm ruger rifle at about 7 pounds. The Bushnell Trophy shotgun/pistol scope believe it or not has not failed me and is reasonably priced in the 150 dollar range although it is a bit difficult to hold at 300yards being only 4 power. I put a box of shells through it every year at the range often only because the on lookers want to give it a try! The Encore is also a very nice setup not to be overlooked as they are also very accurate to 200+ yards. I've had some very amazing opportunities the most memorable was 2 years ago when I took 2 does with a single shot when they both came and filled the scope at about 200 yards.

Good Luck
Tyee
