With my Ankle Fusion surgery coming up in January, I decided to go on-line and see what I could find out about the surgical procedure. It was kinda like finding out what's really in my favorite lunch meat, Head Cheese. Wish I had not even looked.

Only on my left side. I'll always have to wear some kind of support or padding in my left shoe. I'm assuming that will make up for the difference.

Yeah, we should feel bad for Dan having to go through the surgery and rehab, but think about the poor airport security guard that may have to perform a strip search after Dan sets off the metal detectors. There could definitely be more than one victim in this!

Dan,

I regret that you have to go through that... But, obviously, the best medical advice is behind the idea..

So, get through it and I will see you in June.

I feel for you man! I just had a "super fusion" done this year on my ankle after I crushed it snowmobiling. 5 pins, 2 surgeries, 1 plate and I am somewhat mobile again. Vicodin and percoset are gonna be your new friends for awhile! The therapy and rehab can be a long process. Hang in there, best of luck! Do not push it, take it slow.

I guess I was hoping somebody who has had a similar operation would chime in. My problem is severe Arthritis in the ankle joint. Lots of little (same ankle) injuries over the years that has finally caught up with me. The pictures above (even though animated) show exactly what my ankle looks like. I can walk/hobble (kinda) for about 3 minutes, then the pain is to much. The other leg/ankle is still in pretty good shape. But the stress on it from favoring the bad one is not good. I've never broken a bone in my life or been on crutches, so this is going to be a real test of a lot of things for me. Hopefully my recovery isn't as bad and as long as yours was with a trauma injury of that type.

Did you try looking up the procedure on sites like www.webMD.com?

I've been rather impressed with how well they have done explaining things regarding procedures my friends and family have had done - might be worth you time to look it up.

Most important thing form a operation like this is to go in with an open mind, be positive, and then do EVERYTHING the doctor tells you to do for post op therapy, no matter how good or bad you feel.

Thanks Brad.

Found a couple of neat stories and suggestions from others who have had the same operation. And your right Brad, I've always had trouble staying put and doing what the doctors tell me. But this isn't a head cold we're talking about, so I better get my head straight and do what he they say on this score.

Would you prefer to live with the arthritis pain? This is a routine surgery...things could be a whole lot worse.

Dan, I`m 35 days into a total knee replacement. Rehab is a must. Also dont wait for rehab and do it at home inbetween visits. Vicodin ( or whatever they give you) will be your friend. TAKE them. Dont let it get bad first, trust me,,,,it`s bad. I learned everyday you dont use a muscle it take 3 days to get it back. So the more your active the better. Oh,,,,, The cold really sucks!!!!!! It hurts!!!!!!! Also cruches and a cane dont do well in the snow and ice.hehehe

Yeah, John, but the reason you had your knee replaced is somthing we don't need to talk about here. This is a family site after all. Take care buddy.

Dan, good luck with your ankle. Bone fusions are never a fun process. And as mentioned before do what the DOC SAYS!

Thank's to all of you who understand the reason for my post and for the written/verbal SUPPORT. Always considered this site a good place for both moral support and prayers when needed. But even after 8 years of membership and sharing close to 2,000 posts, I still often forget sometimes that not just your friends are reading the threads.

Friends recognize what I was looking/hoping for as support, some others will see it as plea for sympathy. The living need your support, the dead your smpathy. I won't lie, I'm a little aprehensive about this operation. But I think I'm as worried about the crutches as I am the surgery. Being shaped like a bolling pin standing on it's head, keeping my balance was hard enough on 2 good feet. I'm hoping for the "Weeble Effect". They wobble but don't fall down.

Dan the one thing I can tell you is if the surgery goes well you will never regret it. I had back surgerey at 33 and I will never regret it my back was so bad I couldnt even sit in my boat and if I did i took 2 men and a boy to get me out. After all is said and done I am liveing a normal life. The strong will survive and you will do just fine on your crutches.

Well Dan, its to bad one has to go through these things as we get older. Rest assured that the doctors have done many of them. We are so lucky today for just what these trained docs can go. I will be praying for you and the docs of course. There all you have to do now is just trust and relax. One thing for sure you don't have to worry about this year is me catching more fish this winter than you. lol I am sure it will be a tie 0-0. We will both be mended up and ready to go in the spring though. Later Nels

Dan,
I wish you the best and am certain it will come out well.
A few years ago I had 650# of Harley go one direction while my planted foot held firm. My foot was about 180 from where it started. A bunch of screws and a plate or two and it is as good as new. I would not even know what ankle it was if not for a couple of scars. It is amazing what these guys can do for our beat up body parts.
Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year,
Jim O
