Keith and I are interested in going on a feral hog hunt. Anyone ever do that successfully? Where would you suggest we start to look?

I take it you want to hunt something wild? Or are you just looking to shoot one for fun? There is a place in Michigan that offers them in a pen of course, but it's a big pen, and they aren't as easy to kill as one might think. I have the brochure somewhere here.

But otherwise, not sure if your looking to travel real far, but I know my dad and I looked into it in Florida. The opportunities were unlimited. From what I have seen and heard, Texas is another great place also.

A bit of a trip, but... The public affairs office at Ft. Leonard Woods in Missouri will welcome you with open arms. No cost and all the encouragement they can muster. They had an information packet in the past... Lots of hogs and big space to hunt.

If you have not done it before, there are some things you should know... They are not easy to kill... tough animals. And, they are VERY DANGEROUS to you.

Steve,

I have a client that goes every year to the Nascar race in Taladaga and then goes wild bore hunting for 3 days,  They usually shoot 5 pigs each out of a tree stand.  The place they go provides the dogs in case you wound one because they don't want you to go after a wounded pig after dark.  This place will butcher and freeze your pigs for the trip home.  He lines his pickup bed with insulation and brings home enough pig meat to share with family and friends.  If you are interested, I'll hook you up with my client, he's a great guy and you would enjoy discussing the possibilities.

HG and all, thanks! Purple Skeeter, I am more than interested, thanks. Let me know how to get in touch with your client.

Anyone else? We want to kill a couple each, I suppose, to fill a freezer with wild hog and supplement our venison sausage making efforts.

Steve,

I'll be seeing him on Monday, I'll get you his personal contact information so you can exchange stories... let me know what you find out, I may be interested in going.  Every time we talk about the hunt, it's sounds pretty exciting and a blast to do and it was very affordable.

Just to let you know Talledaga is in Alabama.

That's a long drive for pork!

Could get expensive at today's gas prices.

Steve,

Here is what I found out so far.  It's about $400 bucks a guy, you get to shoot 2 pigs, it's private land that the guy hunts only in the Fall even though the season is open all year long.

The price includes all meals and lodging, you have to buy a license (cheep) and pay for gas to get there.

The place is 3 hours south of Atlanta and you have to bring your own 4 wheeler to get to the stands or rent theirs.

My client told me he saw a couple hundred pigs a day because the wood was flooded when they were there.

They encourage you to stay in the stand if you wound a pig cause they fight back and wait till they come with the hounds to find any wounded animals.

He said he would do it again in a second and had a blast the entire time they were down there.
