I'm looking for some opinions on how to set up a 47lc for leadcore trolling. What is the more popular rod used? Thanks Marc

You don't really need a special rod for this. The big thing is finding a rod with a fast action tip. I like longer rods for this application. I use Guide series Dipsy rods 9' or 9-1/2'. They have a soft tip and reach out a ways.

I also use 6 footers for the rear rods. This helps keep the lines seperated. As for the reel itself, it all depends on what depths you want to troll. They say you get 5' for every color of lead at 2mph. On the Mississippi I typically only run 3 to 4 colors. In the spring and fall I'm trolling at about 1mph so I get closer to 7' per color. I run about 100' of 10lb mono backing and then add 3 or 4 colors. I usually use 27's because I don't run full spools. If you are running 47's you can probably get close to 10 colors on the spool without any backing.

Remember that if you want to run boards, you can only run 3 colors or it will sink your boards. I do have some rods set up with 5 colors, and don't see too many times where I'll need more than 25' of depth.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to help.

I have run rods with 7 to 8 colors on Lake Michigan and the boards do not sink. We use them for salmon all the time.

Maybe "Sink" wasn't the right word. They do sag and fall behind once you have more than 3 colors on them.
