| I recently purchased a 1999 Ranger 681VS with a 135 Optimax. All my life I fished out of a tiller but seem to do more bass fishing these days so I went with a console. My question is this for the times when I want to walleye fish would you suggest a small kicker or trolling motor for the transom. I don't seem many 681's with either of them on. If I do back troll would I need to get splash guards? |

Location: Twin Cities, MN | I have seen 681's with a kicker, so I believe your transom will support one. Verify that with Ranger ahead of time just to make sure. I have not seen one with splash guards though, and my 617 does not have any for its kicker.
I really like my kicker, but if you want something other than your main motor on back, I think it comes down to if you also want to troll with it. Otherwise, perhaps a nice minn kota on back is better suited for occasional use.

| I have a 681 with a 3X 70# Minkota and fished yesterday on the Columbia River with 2 foot chop. Back trolled into the wind with little to no problem. The boat has wave wacker and handled fine. Most other boats were fishing forward with bow mount motor but they were wheel boats. The only other boats back trolling were two tiller Yarcraft boats. One was Bobby Crow who put on a great demostration of boat control!

| The vs model does not need splash guards. That is why it was made to way it was. The water deflects and does'nt come in. You can go full throttle with your 135 and pull it into nuetral and you won't get any water pouring in over the transome.
I think a MinnKota trolling motor is all you need. |
