We (ohio) have a very liberal limit on Lake Erie with no possession limit and these pigs still have to take more. I am in favor of the no possession limit as long as the fish are taken legally since the lake commission has determined that we can have these limits and still maintain he fishery. It DOES NOT matter what it costs ODNR to enforce the law, it is not suppose to be a profit-making center for the state -- IT IS the law! We also cannot controll how our Canadian brothers handle their share of our lake resource -- giving almost all of their quota to commercial interests. By the way they take about 2 million eyes a year so it is much, much more than 700,000 pounds of walleye. Also, T-Mac they are not "native" gill nets doing this, they are large commercial interests using huge gill nets and factory ships. In comparison we "greedy" anglers in Ohio never. NEVER take our legal quota of walleyes from Lake Eire -- we take fewer than 1 million per year.
Finally, it makes no difference where they are from, we have outlaws from everywhere, including locally, who think it is OK to STEAL our resource. Yes, they got jail time (which almost no one every does) because they are thieves, they were caught stealing from our state. Actually they probably got less of a penalty that if they had stolen an ODNR pick-up truck.

I'd be willing to be the only reason they got jail time is because they already served the time when they saw the judge. I'll bet they were in jail 3 days before they came in front of a judge or posted bail, so the judge gives them 'credit' for the time served.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn there would have been no jail time if it had not already been served.

I do agree with Tyee, we could all work harder to educate the public. There are some 'good' people out there that have been raised with the wrong set of values when it comes to harvesting wild game, not just fish.

The netting is not another conversation. As long as it is happening anywhere it's part of the conversation. You can't rape any resource on Monday and protect it on Tuesday. It's time for nets to go away.
