However, the chance of rain didn't seem to bother the anglers as much as the predicted winds out of the south 5-15 mph. Fishing the Mississippi river, most know the Wing dams are top choice for finding walleyes, but with low water levels, these isolated current breaks play less a factor without the current higher waters bring. Add in south winds on a river that flows north to south, that creates another dimension. According to many of the pros, under these conditions, one needs to find what little current there is and one will find the fish. Stay tuned for live coverage of the FLW League Championship weigh-in and the PWT Sault Ste. Marie weigh-in, weather permitting. The bite was definitely less than impressive by Mississippi River standards with only one weight showing true colors of what the river can kick out. Wisconsin boater Jimmy Hughes and co-angler Paul Delaney are atop the leader board with 21.04lbs and hold a 7lb.+ lead over second place and local Winona favorite Mitchel Jerowski and Chris Kuehn with a day 1 weight of 14.02lbs. Hughes said on stage that he got five bites and boated all five fish on Willow Cats only to switch back to artificial baits in order to save his precious stash of Cats. The Willow Cat is the preferred bait of choice by almost all walleye anglers fishing the Mississippi, but with the recent VHS findings in Wisconsin, the Cats are only found in two bait shops in Minnesota which have made availability extremely tough. So those who were lucky enough to get a stash put away for the tournament, it's going to be a tournament of who can be the most conservative with the go to bait. Jerry Fox, Jr is sitting in third place with a weight of 12lbs even but hold less than a one pound lead over fourth place Kannon Kares with a weight of 11.07lbs. Brad Dirkman holds down fifth place with a weight of 10.09lbs to hold down the top five. Weather looks to be changing with winds switching from South to NNW at 7mph and cloud cover throughout the day with sun showing itself periodically. Temp highs for tomorrow are 74 with a 20% chance of showers in the am. Watch for continuing coverage of the FLW League Championship tomorrow morning including interviews, morning images, and more. Live broadcast will being around 3pm. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ||
