Member Posts: 744 | How are the throttle controls attached to the side of my boat? I have on old Lund Pro-V with Merc controls. For the life of me, I cannot see how the control is connected to the boat. I can barely reach my arm behind the panel, and I certainly can't see back there. I see no bolts from the front. So please, kick me, throw sand in my eyes and call me Nancy, but tell me what I am missing! (I think I broke the shifter cable...)

on my lund the box is attached from the back of the panel. You should be able to remove the panel and lean it on its side to unscrew the control box.

Member Posts: 744 | The boat/motor (135hp) is a '91. I did not look at what it would take to remove the whole inside of the gunnel wall. The "panel" ends about 16" behind the box, so when I reach in there, the edge of the panel is close to my armpit. There is only about 5-6" of space between the panel and the side of the boat. The levers are on the outside of the panel, but the "box" is hidden between the panel and the side of the boat. That's probably more confusing now?

Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | I take it you have a key switch mounted on your dash. The panel you speak of has screws or rivits holding the panel in place. You can access the back side of the control box by loosening the panel. If that will not work move to plan 2. The control box is held in place by a nut on the base of the handle. To remove you need to shift the handle forward all the way and remove the red button at the bottom that you push in for fast idle. You will see 2 little indents to push. remove the 11/16ths nut in the handle and when the plate comes off with it you will see 3 bolts through the side wall that hold the box in place. Remove them and then you are able to pull the box out from behind. you may need to unbutton a few wires for neutral safty and such. Edited by stacker 3/30/2009 4:07 PM

Member Posts: 744 | Thanks a lot, Denny. I will look at it again tonight. That sounds like it might just work. There has to be a way to get it off without taking half the boat apart. Any thoughts on the broken cable itself? Is it possible something happened to the end where it attaches to the controls, or do they usually break in the middle somewhere? The motor end seems to be fine. If I shift into reverse, it will stay in reverse, even when I move the throttle forward. If I put it in nuetral, it will not shift on it's own, but I can move it from R to N by hand at the motor. From N, I cannot "pull" it into F with the lever, but I can "push" it back into R (one time, then I need to move it by hand again at the motor).

Member Posts: 514 Location: Darboy USA | Thumper, Did you open up the motor to see if the cable slipped off the post? That exact thing happened to me last year on vacation. Brand new Opti and would only go in reverse or neutral, but not forward. Thought it was something major and was pissed, then opened it up and could see the cable to pull the engine into forward fell off and needed to be put back on. Needed a super long pair of needlenose pliers and then tightened the screw and was good as new. Maybe check that first? Or maybe you already did.

Member Posts: 744 | Darboy- I will look closer at it, but I don't think that's the case. (However, if you are correct, you will be my new hero, and as such, will be entitled to all the benfits that status brings). It sounds like you were able to shift from R to N though? I cannot do that. I will check it out though for sure. Thanks much!

Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Broken cable because as you shift to reverse the inner core is lining up and it will push the cable and shift the lower unit. when you try to go forward the inner core is not attached so it cannot pull the shift lever back to nuetral. Nor can it pull the shift lever to forward, but I bet you can hand shift into forward and lever shift to neutral and then into reverse.

I will take some pics tonight if you guys promise not to laugh at my boat...

Member Posts: 744 | Here are the pics. There is a set screw under the lever that looks like it locks the handle on. You can see how hard it is to access the backside of the controls... After looking it all over, I decided to just take it in and have the pros look at it. I need to get on the water and I am not confident I can do the job myself. I wish I could...splitting wood and taking my first decent length bike ride on Saturday. Still not a 50 degree day coming in the 10 day forcast. Hopefully the marshes stay full until the water warms up a bit for spawning...

Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | When someone asks for help on here inevitably someone always says just take it in. I did not want to be that guy. Now, that is what you have decided to do, so, I can tell you my first experience with that control box. I found I am great at disassemble, but reassemble seems to cause me hardship. It is the toughest to work on. 4 hours later, they took it away from me and finished the job. Thumper, You have made the right decision.
