Guys,
I have noticed this year that sometimes while my motor is running that the tach will move up and down but the motor sounds normal. For example we are motoring around looking for fish and the tach reads 2000 rpm then it will bounce up to 4000 rpm and then right back down. I haven't really thought much about it becasue the motor does not rev with this increase. Well yesterday while on Saginaw Bay I hit the throttle out of the launch and trimmed the boat out and looked down at the tach and it said I was at 8000 rpm YIKES, but the motor did not sound like it was reving that high. I have herd it rev high when you blow the prop out but this sounded like normal running rpms. So my question is what could make this happen, or do I have a bad tach? The motor is a 2002 Merc. 115hp four stroke with the factory prop on it. Has anyone ever had a tach go bad?

I'm not sure if this is your problem but I had a similar problem on my 40hp merc. The voltage regulator went out, causing my tach not to work, but right before the tach quit it jumped around like you are describing.
