The 33rd annual Mercury Nationals got underway this morning with the 300 boat field taking off from Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac, WI. The weather definitely dominated the conversation amongst the anglers this morning as the field prepared for take-off.

Yesterday's weather started off in the mid-50's with a rather large front approaching from the west, eventually pushing to the north and temps in the mid-80's with the humidity setting in as the field gathered for registration and rules meeting Friday afternoon.

The anglers WalleyeFIRST talked with this morning said the bite is tough and just about every tactic is in play right now.

95% of the boats stayed on 'Bago (from the handful I saw pass me in the river).

Pretty decent day really, times of calm and up to 10 mph wind, overcast and a few misty sprinkles. Wind direction pretty much changed all day...was Eastish when I got off at 1:00.

Good luck to all the WFers.

Some consider the 33rd annual Mercury Nationals bite tough, but some say the bite is typical 'Winnebago'. Kevin and Mike Blanck brought a five fish limit to the scales that weighed 20.74 pounds to take the Day One lead. Team Blanck hold just under a three pound lead over second place team Jason Bellmer and Paul Schmitz of Fond du Lac, WI. Bellmer and Schmitz weighed 17.90 pounds.

Dennis Buechel and Matt Seifert weighed 16.34 pounds of Winnebago walleyes on Day One to hold third going into the final day.

The weather was about perfect for moving around the big Winnebago system today. Light winds and mild temps under cloudy skies were the rule, and it looks like tomorrow will be a carbon copy except for a 30% chance of rain all the way through the tournament day. Temperatures are to be in the 50's early topping out at 71 at weigh in time under cloudy skies. Winds are to be light out of the NE at 3 to 5 miles per hour.

There are several teams in contention for tomorrow's win if the bite holds or improves and the fish the top 7 were on are still there and are 'on'. There's plenty of fish to be caught in Winnebago big enough for a 15th place day one team to swoop in and take it. It could be a shoot-out!

Watch for day two coverage to begin at approximately 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Nice work blancks. I remember running into kevin quite a bit on the east side, when he had that blue ranger. Not sure if his missus still works at the pipe citgo. Best chicken around. Funny how everything comes back to fried chicken.
Keep up the good work guys.
