My Dad is thinking about shuting down our buisness for a week in late July of next year for a family vacation. It would consist of My dad and mom, brother and his wife and child, my wife and two kids and me of course. The women are going to need a place to shop and us guys need a great place to fish. I know that alot of the northern lakes get popular with the recreational boaters. We need two cabins. Any of you have any ideas? What about Cauldron flowage? I know Troy goes there. Any help would be appreciated. Any place within 350 miles would work. Thanks,
Rich

My vote is within 20 miles of Woodruff. There are so many lakes in this area with just about every spieces of fish available to be caught. And if the weather turns sour, you can pick a small lake ringed with giant maples - to help protect you from the wind - and still catch fish.

Then there is ALOT of places nearby for the girls to spend your money!

houghton lake in central northern lp of mich is a great destination. a very active multi-species lake with walleye, pike, lm, sm, bg, and crapie. a side trip 20 miles north to higgins lake puts you on a fine trout fishery. the houghton lake area has a lot of attractions for the wife and children. mini golf, go carts, arcades, and more. did i mention fishing? many antique and arts and crafts stores dot the area as well as a outlet mall 25 miles south in west branch. you can dine out in a different resturaunt each night. there are many multi-cabin resorts around the lake with mi personal favorite, songers log cabins ( http://northguide.com/cgi-bin/xcheadl2.pl ) on the north shore away from all the traffic. lots of info is available on the web with a search of houghton lake.

Rich,

I agree with the Houghton Lake suggestion. I have spent a week there each of the past three summers. I live in Appleton, however, my parents and siblings all live in metro Detroit. It's a great destination for all of us to meet at. There is always something for my wife to do while I am out fishing. Lots of shopping, gift & craft shops, numerous restaurants and taverns along with the funland type amusement parks.

They have a pretty decent walleye fishery along with great pike, sm, and panfish (crappy, blue gill and perch). Unfortunately, no sheephead.

We have always stayed at a small resort located on the West Shore. No phones, color TV, cable, air conditioning, and fully functional kitchens. It has a great beach and play area for kids, including a large indoor game room and a pool table. Best of all, a real fish cleaning room that is indoors with running water, sink, and a large work area.

At this place, you need to know which cabins to rent and which ones to shy away from. If you are interested in a name, phone number, and info on which units to rent, drop me an e-mail. You will find my address in my profile.

Dan

What is the status of the Pike fishery there? I will be there in two weeks, and if there are BIG pike, will be sure to get my boat wet some.
