Member Posts: 8 | All the marketing aside, I am trying to figure out the Cost of ownership for one of the motors listed. I live a good distance from any dealer of these motors so being able to winterize myself and perform simple maintenance would be a plus. Fewer dealer trips for routine/non routine maintenance is desired. I have looked at weight in two stroke and 4 stroke, warranties, reliability etc of a bunch of these motors and seem to be leaning towards a 4 stroke Suzuki 175 to power a Tuffy 1890. With the correct prop on that motor the torque "should" throw that boat out of the hole within 4 seconds. I have heard that this motor is not a good choice for an 1890 and after reading issues on other forums about the incorrect prop on most installations I can see why. This motor is very efficient (so I've read) with a 16 inch prop (comments and real life experience on this issue are welcome) part of the reasons for looking at the Suzuki motor is reliability, and displacement. Weight wise this 4 stroke only looks to be 35-50 lbs heaver then all the comparable hp two strokes out there and is lighter or right in the same range as the 4 strokes it goes head to head with. Looking for input, both Pro's and Con's of the Suzuki vs others. Thanks | ||

Member Posts: 3899 | Holeshot will be nowhere near that of a 200HP Optimax, or ETech, especially with a 175 Suzuki. The Opti is very easy on fuel if you stay around the 3800-4000 RPM range, and have the motor trimmed to optimum. I suspect the ETech is pretty good, too. The 175 will have to work harder to maintain the boat on the pad at those speeds, and your fuel efficiency will suffer as a result. Normally apsirated 4-strokes do not produce nearly the low end torque of a direct injected 2-stroke. | ||

Member Posts: 8 | We have a good Merc and a good Suzuki dealer about 40 miles and 27 miles respectively. There are about 5 Suzuki and obviously more Merc Dealers as they have a bigger network. | ||

Member Posts: 1991 | Like Shep says the OPTI or Direct Injected engines will have an outstanding holeshot. And fuel mileage on the DI engines can be if not better than allot of 4 Strokes. Go to Mercurys website and look at the engine comparisons, some good info. I have riden in a couple of Verado powered boats and they are impresive in holeshot and speed. | ||

![]() Member Posts: 650 | Mr. Bow, you might want to look at the 200 hp suzuki. wouldn't hurt. A 200 opti merc would be a good choice too. I have a 150 opti on my 1760, after getting the right prop thanks to guys here, my boat is faster and has great fuel milage. oil hardly goes down... if I cruise at 38-40 mph, I could run all day long... I won't put my gas #s here cause you'd think I'm lying... If you got a Suz/merc dealer that close, great start... Cost of ownership is a funny thing in regards to boats and especially outboard motors. All outboards are the work of satin. I could write my experience with outboards but you'd think I'm lying. anyway, I'd go with a 200 HP suzuki (SS model available?) or a 200 opti. both should give you similar cost of ownership. | ||
