That is painting my own lures, blades and whatever else needs to be painted in a certain color. I've got the lure building thing down, I just hope the painting process comes as easy to me. ![]() I went with an all-inclusive Paasche Air Brush kit from Master Craft. http://www.usartsupply.com/airbrush/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=ABD+KIT-... Spray booths are listed as well, but almost as costly as the kit itself. Going to build one out of a cardboard box and an old Oven Hood. The paints I'll be using will all be water based, so no harm there. My buddy just started Air Brush painting and this is the same kit he bought to duplicated the Rapala Fire Perch exactly. Here is the original Rapala and his painted copy below it. He painted over another Clear Glass Husky ![]() Edited by walleye express 12/12/2010 12:39 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]()

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | We got to make 4 trolling trips out on the bay this fall starting just prior to first ice and our deer season, with our last trip being on December 3rd. This particular color caught 2/3 of the fish on every trip. 7 out or 9 on the last trip. I tried to find and buy at least one more during that time but could not find any more. Seems it was ordered by mistake (being a Europeon color pattern) by the store and was not re-stocked. With how clear our waters have become, especially during the fall months, you'd think something this flashy would scare the fish versus attracting them. But like all things fishing, you roll with the punches.

Member Posts: 80 Location: Lake Erie | I was fortunte enough to get my hands on a pile of the shallow ones in size 12 and 14 as well as 3 of the deep ones, GREAT color, although I have caught more on the shallow size 14 one with a snap weight during the day over the deep diver, the shallow ones see alot of action at night, in dirty water it can't be beat.

I followed your lead and painted a few of these in both deep and shallow divers. If you use waterbased paints like Createx, you have to clear them or it will come right off. Once cleared, the waterbased paint will be sealed and waterproof. Here's my latest airbrush creation. I'm kinda proud of this one. My first shot at a realistic pike scheme. We're now having some fair success with Jigging Rapalas we're painting in the same color scheme. ![]() Edited by walleye express 1/20/2011 6:41 PM

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | There are some "Bullet Proof" car/truck clear coat paint brands that cost an arm and a leg. My buddy likes and uses the simple Rust'OLeum CC out of a can. ![]()

Member Posts: 300 Location: Lincoln Park, Mi | Larrys - 1/23/2011 4:40 PM Thanks guys: any special clearcoat brand better than the others? There lies the most difficult question to answer in custom painting. What clear?? There are many bullet proof clears out there, but most are 2-component and are very hazardous or carsenogenic. 2 component auto clears use isocyanate as a curing agent and is one of the nastiest chemicals out there. Essentially crystalizes in your lungs and builds up over time. 2-component epoxies are much less hazardous, but still give off carsenogenic by-products during the curing process. The basement painter standard seems to be to use Devcon 2 ton epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol. Though it produces a relatively tough clear, it is nothing more than GLUE, and will yellow very badly over time. For most, it is the best answer to a clear coat balancing safety vs durability. Lastly, you have your 1 component lacquer finishes, such as Dan mentioned. Besides the nasty solvents used, it is relatively safe. No different than using spray paint in a can. The down side is that 1 component clears are usually too hard, lack good adhesion, and for fishing lures, are not very durable at all. Very prone to chiping, cracking, and teeth marks. It's all a game of give and take. I'm a paint/coatings chemist by day and can tell you that formulating my own clear for fishing lures was the most difficult project I ever took on. Trying to get a clear that adheres to metals, plastics, other paints, yet has the flexibility to use over balsa was almost an insurmountable task. Took 4 years of r&d, but I think I nailed it. I still modify my clear every once in a while as I discover new challenges, so the project is stil ongoing. LOL Good luck and I hope I was of a little bit of help, but not too discouraging. ![]() Edited by terroreyes 1/24/2011 5:37 PM
