Of course ended up with a few extra things as always. One of the things I was after was a few more drop shot hooks. I tried drop shotting before with not very good success. Part of that reason IMO was the Power Pro Braide I use. I love the line and it's on every reel I own. But being it's so limp, it doesn't allow the hook to stick out very well using any kind of knot or any kind of slack line while drop shotting, and stays loose at the tie to a certain degree because it's so limp. So when a fish hits it's tough to get a good/deep hook set in the fish's mouth while using it. I love and use Mustad Hooks religiously on just about every crankbait or harness I tie. But, I think I found the remedy to my problem yesterday at Franks. These new drop shot hooks are called StandOut Lever Action fishing hooks. The hook is supported from two angles while on the line and when straightened out on the hook set, will simply have to give you a better hooks set farther back in the fish's mouth. Below are the pictures. I tied them with some Vicious Fluorocarbon line because my braide is out in the garage. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]()

These hooks are far from new, but yes much more effctive than the old systems attempted.

Still, I like the concept and the idea. I'll put them to quick use and report back if our ice ever leaves this year. ![]()

![]() Member Posts: 650 | they have been out a long time... Can't say they work any better... my big problem was with the extra hardware on the line. A smaller fish can really wad the line around in a big knot... the extra wire on the bottom made it worse. For dropshotting any hook will do... try using your power pro and a length of 6# floro... use a tiny swivel... very popular here in NY...

Tying my hooks myself using the conventional method gives me a better vertical profile that I feel is critical. Dan: Get rid of the Power Pro braid if you want to be successful with dropshotting. It is the ultimate finesse technique and you need to use near invisible line.

Truthfully, besides the Power Pro limp problem, I had planned on baiting the drop shot hook with shiners hooked through the lips and thought this extra (Hook to line Brace) would help keep it more straight on the hook. I still have pleanty of the other drop shot hooks, so both will get tried. Thank's for the input. ![]() Edited by walleye express 3/16/2011 3:17 PM

![]() Member Posts: 650 | They do have some stand out walleye kits I think... I myself Don't like the braid leader deal. just too many knots... my set up is simple reel:us reel 230sx... 5 or 6# sunline florocarbon, skinny bear drop shot hook, size 1 or 2. river 2 sea tungsten sinker, 1/8 to 1/4. In cold weather I use 6# p line flouraclear, the sunline is a nightmare in cold weather... yes fancy stuff but works. So a few years ago I draw some guys in a stren series event. they were less than prepared. drop shot with 12# mono and some cheap rods and reels... they caught the crap out of them, I just about chewed my arm off! I still got a check... mostly drop shotting 30-50 ft up on the St lawrence... pic to follow, yes I'm bored...

![]() Member Posts: 650 | Hey WE, forgot another set up... bought a left over Rapala rod at gander, 6-6 med baitcaster, $7.00. found an old baitcasting reel in the basement, 20# power pro, 8# flro leader, great little heavier drop shot deal... we use these tiny spro swivels for a connector. Since I use 8# floro for some other riggin' I keep some pre rigged with the swivels in bags. this would be a good deal with your shiners! My problem with the standout hook was with little fish, perch bass picks, gobies etc. when you get them out of the water they tend to do a head shake which sends the weight around in circles at warp speed. The standout made the mess even worse... I do have a friend in western ny that swears by the standout hook for bass and crappie. even ice fishing.

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | The ice fishing application also crossed my mind. The bay walleye this year were so finicky nobody knew from day to day what would work. Ice Drop Shotting would do two things at the same time. Kick up a little (fish attracting) sand on the bottom with the sinker and present live bait in a less bulky, more natural fasion. You could actually add another drop shot hook above the other one here in Michigan. ![]()
