I have a 2005 12 volt auto pilot. The response time for making it turn is very slow this year. In fact I can't even use it because by the time it settles out the boat is out of control. My question, Is there something to oil or grease in the gearbox itself or is my motor just old and tired like me?

I would try two things.

if u think its the shaft. lightly coat your favorite lube on shaft.
If u think its the gear box, it could be a weak connection not able to supply enough amps. go through starting at your battierys clean all the connections.. lightly coat with electrolyte greese (spark plug boot lube) from there go through every connection, you can probebly stop at the main board.. its only a few screws to lube them connections up... 1 hr of work will save you the $$ of a new motor.
