Subject: Lake Winnebago weed Problem

Lakefront property owners and others interested in managing aquatic plants and weeds in Lake Winnebago are invited to attend one of two identical informational meetings scheduled Monday, March 28, and Thursday, March 31, in North Fond du Lac and Fond du Lac.
The second meeting is scheduled 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Large Group Instruction Room of UW-Fond du Lac, 400 University Drive. The second meeting will be video recorded for later viewing online.
Speakers will be Jay Schiefelbein and Chuck Fitzgibbon, DNR water resource management specialists; and Chad Cook, UW-Extension natural resources educator.
Those who attend will learn more about aquatic plants and how beach associations and residents can work with the DNR to manage plants if they become a nuisance, according to a news release from Aquatic Biologists Inc. of Fond du Lac.
The meetings are being sponsored by Fond du Lac County Executive Allen Buechel, state Sen. Randy Hopper and state Rep. Dick Spanbauer in conjunction with UW-Extension and the state Department of Natural Resources.
More information is available by calling the Fond du Lac County Executive's Office, (920-929-3156 or contacting [email protected]

I was not aware that weeds had become a problem on the lake. Algae in the past was an issue but the weeds are a sign of a healthy water system.
Has anyone from Fisheries Management been invited?

I am not a water skier and do not claim to be!

It's only a problem for whiny lakeshore owners. While this particular meeting is informational and won't be a venue to solicit public comment, it's good that anglers are made aware of what will eventually become calls for habitat destroying 'weed management' programs.

The weeds have become a problem. They get so thick towards the end of July that the oxygen level gets low enough that fish start to die. The fish also can’t swim out of them and become trapped. The rotting starts in September bad enough that us whiny (thanks Viking) lake owners can’t be outside much or have the windows open for the night time sleep. If you’re not use to the strong smell of a septic tank then you wouldn’t like this smell either. Then comes the kids not being able to swim or the swimmers itch that comes from stagnate water. The DNR says we should shovel the weeds up and bury them or have them hauled away at our expense. Getting a boat out of the boat lift isn’t worth the effort. I can back up about 20 feet and the weeds stop the boat dead. No going forward or back. If you can get turned out towards the main lake it can be a half mile of solid weeds and struggle. I could go on but I imagine someone like Viking will lay into me about moving off the lake. Blah Blah…

My mother lives on a lake where they sprayed in early spring to kill only millfoil. Guess what, they killed all the weeds and now only the milfoil is returning. The perch don't spawn around the area any more and the Musky that swam around the piers are also gone. 2-4D in any form is also not enviro friendly so don't drink too much of the koolaid.

First they try end all tourny's on bago and now hey want to pollute our healthy habitat and kill unpopular marine plants. Why not put your effort into farm runoff and the high levels phosphorus and nitrogen . Homeonwer assoction on bago will not have much support here. Have a nice day guest

Buckwheat- I can certainly understand the troubles with the weeds. If you had your way, what would you like to see happen? You are allowed to remove weeds mechanically already, are you allowed to poison with a permit? I'm just wondering what you see as the solution to this problem as a lakefront resident.

The "Winnebago Weed Whinners" meetings are something to behold, they only invite who they want and it's not a public forum by any means. Fisheries staff were not invited before and told they would not have an opportunity to speak and one of the earlier meetings. Politics is being played here by a select few property owners and unfortunately it's with a public resource. There is big money being spent on elected officials who are "listening" to concerned citizens.
The bottom line is the proposal to use poisons to kill weeds will hurt the waterway and public funding for weed cutting is outrageous.
Sportsmen's groups really need to get together and let these public officials know we have a lot more votes than a couple of landowners!

I have a very "green" simple, affordable way of controlling your lake weeds and mucky lake bottoms.

No chemicals, no electricity needed.

Please visit my website: www.lakemat.com or give me a call at 616 293-9101.

Thanks,

Douglas Fast
