With the intensity mounting and more great fishing in store for 113-boat field, day two got underway on Lake Oahe this morning. Yesterday every boat weighed fish, which has been attributed to the stable conditions and aggressively feeding fish. The trolling bite seems to be doing very well as most of the fish are being found suspended over deeper water. Fishing overlooked presentations around submerged structure has also been a big contributor to the top weights.

“I only fished for two hours yesterday,” says Chase Parsons, currently holding down the 9th place spot. “The number of fish we marked and contacted in practice leads me to believe the pattern will hold again today and hopefully tomorrow if I can make the cut. While I won’t give away any secrets just yet, I will tell you we are fishing a pattern that I would bet not a single angler is onto. And, we are finding big fish there as well.”

With The Next Bite team consisting of Gary Parsons, Keith Kavajecz, Tom Kemos, and of course Chase Parsons all hanging on in the top 11, they are putting on a walleye clinic. The weather has been stable, but the wind pulled a 180 and might make things difficult for many anglers, but the TNB team is confident they will show up again with hefty bags at the weigh in.

“I’m on the right kind of fish to win this event,” says season points leader, Tom Keenan. “However, I’m fishing for two trophies today. I finished day one in 15th, but due to the slot limit and no cull rules, a lot of anglers could stub their toe by keeping the wrong fish or throwing back the wrong fish. Its all about two good overs and a solid stringer of unders, but they showed up yesterday and I expect the same for today.

If Keenan can finish in 17th or better he will lock down anglers of they year, but Chase Parsons is nipping at his heels and keeping Keenan looking over his shoulder. Both are fishing for the tournament win first and the 2011 AOY title second. It will be a shoot out!

Weigh in will be taking place this afternoon at 3 PM at Spring Creek Resort, updates to follow.

Stay Tuned!

Day two ended just as expected, a total shoot out! It has been said by walleye freaks across North America that Lake Oahe is one of the finest walleye fisheries there is. That was proven again today as some of the finest sticks in pro walleye angling showed the world what kind of fishery South Dakota has!

Chase Parsons started the day in 9th but had confidence in a growing pattern and knew the fish he needed would be there. “I was one of the first boats out this morning and I knew getting first crack at these fish was going to be critical to a quality limit. I was not disappointed! I had to fish a little longer today than yesterday, but was still finished before noon. Tomorrow should be just as good!”

Parsons brought in the top bag of the tournament thus far with 22-08 and enough to claim the lead at the end of day two with 39-11. While he won’t divulge his bag filling presentation, he claims it is not being used by anyone else on the lake. He finished the day anxious to get back out there because he feels the winning bag is there!

It is officially unofficial, but Tom Keenan weighed enough fish to easily claim the 2011 Angler Of the Year award, but it won’t be official until after tomorrow’s weigh-in. Keenan managed to bring in 17-02 pounds and a total weight of 33-06 allowing him 9th place and he will be fishing tomorrow among the top 10. Keenan needed a minimum of a 17th place finish to lock in the AOY award, and as it stands now the worst he can do will be 10th. Unofficial as it may still be, statistically he’s the 2011 FLW Walleye Tour Angler Of the Year.

“I have won AOY a couple times in the past and it is one of the most coveted trophies that a competitive angler can win,” Keenan explains. “That is one they can never take away from you. I have had an amazing year and consider myself very blessed to have made it this far. Many folks just don’t know how much time and effort goes into competing at this level, but it is taxing, no doubt. This year’s AOY will mean the world to me, I am honored to have accomplished it, unofficially.”

With the top 10 anglers confirmed, the names are not really that surprising. One thing is for sure, however, it will be a top gun slinging shoot out, just as it was yesterday and today. Some of the world’s finest walleye anglers are fishing tomorrow and they surely will not disappoint.

1st – Chase Parsons with 39-11
2nd – Keith Kavajecz with 38-12
3rd – Darrell Peters with 36-06
4th – Tommy Skarlis with 35-09
5th – Joe McCartin with 34-14
6th – Tom Kemos with 34-14
7th – Dean Arnoldussen with 33-09
8th – Lynn Jurrens with 33-09
9th – Tom Keenan with 33-06
10th – Pete Harsh with 32-11

The Presentation chase is using was used by several anglers in this evEnt and has been used for many years. FLW anglers have used this same presentation in other tournaments this year.

So if you know, what is it. Spill the beans, I am going fishing today and might want to use this pattern...

I agree with Ieye. If i speculate correctly what the secret bait and presentation is (which I am) this is nothing new or secret. It has been used on nebraska lakes in recreational and tournament settings for over 10 years. A local well renowned guide has used these for 20 to 30 years to catch walleyes when chase was still in diapers. And as far as something new to lake oahe or the missouri river system, wrong again. Certainly a job well done, but nothing new or innovative, just new and "secret" to the Parsons team (until the 4:00 weigh ins that is).

Either way, as you say using lures not usually applied to walleyes isn't new, it certainly worked well yesterday and the day before and it's obvious who was successful using the technique. And it may not be 'new' to that group of anglers, in fact I know Gary's done that before on other waters.

Uhh.....let me guess----spinnerbaits. Little behind the trend to make the call he made, "Revolutionize" Good job Chase but nothing new to the midwest

If I listened and read Chase's comments correctly he never said anything about revolutionizing walleye fishing, only that he didn't think anyone else in the tournament was using a similar presentation. There have been more video updates so it's possible he did say this but I didn't hear it.

Give credit where credit is due. He fished for a maximum of 3 hours a day, the team placed one, two and three. Maybe the pattern isn't brand new, but they were the only ones doing it. The pattern for this particular tournament was perfect and most importantly consistent.

Keith mentioned the pattern came from Nebraska, so it is not like they said they created it. Revolutionize is a strong term, however, this is a robust presentation. It has nothing to do with light line, finesse and using your drag. It has absolutely changed the way these pros look at fishing trees, it's aggressive to say the least.

Trust me many, maybe not all, but most of the guys that have been around this pattern have thought this was an alewife only pattern for walleye. A couple of these guys fished the tourney and didn't fair to well because they believed the talk.

They broke the code this past week, they finished 1,2,3. This isn't Chase's first rodeo and he has had a great career, folks he is only 27. Like it or not Chase is a great fisherman and most importantly a good man. Will this pattern be brought to the forefront, of course and many midwestern reservoir fisherman will benefit. Plus, I get bored out of my skull watching slip bobbers.

Great job Chase, Keith, Kemos and Gary! A great performance to say the least.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. It was a pretty exciting tournament, especially since I was standing up on stage at the end with KK, knowing that one of us was going to win and Kemos 3rd. As far as the presentation, obviously we aren't close to the first ones to use it, but it is something that the vast majority of walleye anglers have never done. In several interviews I gave credit to where it came from and at no point took credit that we were the ones to first use it. Either way, it's a presentation that will continue to be tried by our crew in a variety of different bites. Looking forward to getting back on the water for the AIM and FLW Championships and congrats to Tom Keenan for his FLW AOY title!

That's a great win for ya Chase. Having family and friends right up there with you is something special. Congrstulations on your victory. I was there when your dad won in '98. Did you go to the Long Branch Sat. night?

great tourney and great job! Never got home in time to see the weigh ins... nice write ups here. great pics. from the pics and stories sounds like another awesome lake. FLW really hit some nice places!
I didn't see any interviews so please pass on the technique to a left coaster. Irene has put any fishing on hold for awhuile.
tell me about "BAR STEAK HOUSE" bar and steak being very popular words for me.

The answer to this mystery does indeed intrigue me. If the presentation was spinnerbaits it'll mean another set of lures to puchase... do we ever have too many? Over ten years ago I was fishing Monroe Reservoir by Bloomington, Indiana in May using eighth ounce Beetle-spins in 3-5' of water and doing well catching walleyes. A Beetle-spin is just a smaller version spinnerbait. I admit that I had thought the normal size spinnerbaits too large. Interesting to rethink this now. Enquiring minds want to know!!!!!

My confidence level that walleyewilly's answer of spinnerbaits is correct just increased a thousandfold after doing a bit of googling. I believe that the forage being alewives in Oahe was mentioned somewhere along the line. That parallels Lake MacConaughy in Nebraska. Check out this article. It's quite revealing.

It's a reaction strike in the trees, shad and smelt are the forage in Oahe.

Ok, here is what I had seen: "Trust me many, maybe not all, but most of the guys that have been around this pattern have thought this was an alewife only pattern for walleye." So, I didn't read it 100% correct, but the response of the walleyes to the baits seems to remain the same, whether the forage species are alewives, shad, or smelt. All quite interesting, I must say and does go against the "accepted wisdom". Always nice to see success from thinking outside the box.
