Location: Devils Lake ND | Life vests save lives, period the end, it saved mine!!!! Fishing a tournament on Lake Toho just outside of Orlando, we made a run to our spot, shut down, and turned the boat towards the shore, unknown to us, there was another boat less than 100 yds behind us. They had no time to react at 60+ MPH and literaly went right over the top of us. Across the back deck you can see in the carpet where the prop "Walked" across it less than 1 foot behind the drivers head. The hull pushed him down by his head into the middle part of the boat seat. He was spared but did take a shot to his right shoulder and had a laceration on his head. I however was in the passengers seat. Some how, by the grace of god, I was able to grab ahold of the bow of the boat that went over us and hold on, thus removing me from our boat and carrying me into the water. A very good thing because his hull came down and crushed our boats gunell right where I would have been sitting. I remember very little at that point. Next thing I remember I was under the water and something hit my legs, that would be the other guys motor to be exact. I thought I was dead and seemed to be under the water for an eternity, then I popped up out of the water, thank god for lifevests! I had a good laceration on my leg from the prop and my right forearm had been badly burnt by a fiberglass burn from grabbing onto his hull on exit. Due to the impact from my side, my back has suffered to this day also. Fish and Game along with the Sheriffs department investigated and you know you are lucky when the Sheriffs says to you and I quote, "you shouldn't be alive right now, I should be calling your wife letting her know we are searching for your body". After initial first aid and the investigation, and a whole lot of Motrin, we still had about 4 hours of tournament left. The boat was still floating even though the big motor had been crushed, the electric trolling motor still worked so we set sail just off the dock and ended up third in the tournament at the end of the day only to load the boat and find out the truck had a flat tire. Thankfully, there were some boyscouts there on an outing and they did us a good deed and helped us change it. Normally, I never wore my life vest unless I was fishing a tournament but that has changed abit since this incident.
Just thought I would share my story with you as I share it with all the boater safety classes that I teach. |

| Wallynut WOW! Amazing that no one died! I always have a PFD on, I wear an inflatable you don't even notice it on. |
