Subject: Bow mount trolling motors

Need your opinions on my best option for a bow mount trolling motor. I have an old Minnkota now and when on Bago in any kind of chop, the blades come out of the water and I can not hold any kind of course or speed when trolling for walleyes.

What are some good choices that are good for the money and performance under
$1000. Or would it be better to go with a 4 stroke kicker which cost quite a bit more money? Be mounting it on a 16'-8" Sylvan Deep V. Thanks for any help from you pro's.

I would put on a kicker not only for better handling while trolling, but if your main motor ever goes out your going to want a kicker to get you back to port. I put a 5 horse 4 stroke merc on my 17 ft Tuffy and needed it twice now. I think I paid $ 1400 for it 9 years ago. Call Denny at Fort Fremont and he can set you up with bowmount advice or kicker. 920-446-3220. Also the kicker pushes my boat at a little better then 5mph in smaller waves. Just my opinion.

I think you need both it can be hard to pull harnesses with a kicker although it can be done with drift socks and such. But I think that each serves its purpose. I would go with a Terrova with the iPilot for sure even if you are trolling with the kicker you set the course with the iPilot and let it steer your boat automatically staying on course. If you have to choice between one or the other go with the kicker or look for a low priced used kicker and then go with the Terrova. Just my opinion.

I would have to agree with the Terrova option, unless you are a cable-driven-type-of-guy - then a Minn Kota Fortrex would be my advice. Kicker motors are nice for trolling - but for rigging or positioning - I prefer an electric bowmount. If it's fairly windy and the bow mount won't work - you can always back troll with the "big" engine. The Terrova will also give you the option of updating to an I-Pilot if you choose to do so in the future.
