Member Posts: 1040 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Alright, I've been racking my brain a little trying to figure out a way to catch more walleyes once the first ice period has come and gone and the dead of winter has set in. I'm fishing lakes anywhere from 500-3500 acres mainly, either natural or drainage lakes. The first ice period typically is pretty easy, fishing weed edges and bays. However, now that the first ice period has come and gone, any thoughts on where to look for walleyes this time of the year? Are walleyes looking/moving more towards main lake or large basin areas during the day and moving up on flats in the evenings? Or are they relating around rocks humps? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Pelican Lake is one of the main lakes I'm talking about here. Here is an old map from the DNR website: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/lakes/maps/DNR/1579900a.pdf

I'd set up a tip up on top of the gravel point and one on the deep end of the drop off, then jig everywhere in between. The nice thing about this location is that you seem to have several different types of structure to fish in a small area. I would expect fish to move up onto the flats to feed randomly throughout the day, and slide back down to the depths. You might be surprised how often the tip up on the top of the flat will go off. I'd look for a 15-20' shelf in there for the daytime bite with my top tip up. I'd expect the mid day fish to be hold up in the 30' hole surronded by 25' of water, but move up into the low to mid 20's randomly. I'd spend the most of my day jigging 18-25' but still spend some time in the deep stuff. I'd use something like a #5 jigging Rapala with a minnow head to see if I could get some lookers. That's the first half of the battle. I'd also go with a 1/4 oz rattling flyer spoon with a minnow head if they come in and look at the rap but won't hit. Looks like a good area, I might have to make a trip up some time. Attachments ---------------- ![]()
