| I'm looking to purchase my first brand new boat. I've looked at many models starting at Rangers and working my way down. If I really wanted too I can afford a 40k Lund but I do not wish to. I like to cling to my money and the less I have to pay for a boat, means less time at work paying for it and more time on the water. Plus a smaller boat will offer savings in fuel for both it and my truck. I had initially looked at the Classic model and really like the setup of the Lunker II 165 CS model. It does have a narrower beam but is quite a big little boat. I know it's package price is about $10,400 with TM, graph, and 25hp Yamaha. However I plan to max out with a 50hp Yamaha, upgrade to a 55lb Terrova with the I pilot feature, and upgrade the electronics. I haven't gotten a quote yet on how much extra it will cost going from the 25hp to the F50 but I'm guessing around 1k maybe? Boat is on a Hustler trailer. I'm curious if anyone here has this model/setup what your thoughts and likes/dislikes are. My only concern is the small 8gal internal fuel tank if I make a long run. Also how does the boat do in rougher water? Say if I want to go a few miles out walleye fishing on Erie or get stuck on big water with a storm moving in. It's mostly going to be used in calmer smaller lakes but I want to be able to hit bigger places when the opportunity arises. Also for anyone who owns one, is there any chance of getting a 7'6" muskie rod in the locker? |

| Had a Lunker tiller, but older style (slightly different floor plan and no built in tank).
Only had 5 gallons of gas, but that never seemed to be an issue Not sure of how far a run you would be planning on, but I would think close to or over 10 mpg if memory served correct. I also ran a 50 hp - did easily over 30 mph. Boat was nice riding and handled well. Never had it in real rough water, but also felt secure when in it. Took a chop well within limits. I did not like the side livewell, more because my gas tank and a heavier than myself fishing buddy both sat on that side putting a lean on the boat. I then looked at the Classic for the built in tank and central livewell at that time, but they were offering a Navigator on sale for the same price. Went with the Navigator with a 60 hp. Very solid boat, handled rough water very well just not at great speeds. The 60 hp was almost too small when under heavy loads or extremely rough water. Hind sight I would say the Classic is the best of both worlds.
Good luck. |

| Hey have the Classic 165CS instock as well but it's about 5k more. Not sure if it's worth the extra expense to me. |

| Looked at the Alumacraft website and the Classic is $4000 more, but that pricing included a 40hp motor vs. the 25hp. If they are both in-stock just sit yourself inside and try to get a feel for the boat(s). I think you would have to finalize the Lunker price with an upgraded motor also to get a fair comparison. Both great boats, it comes down to what fits your fishing style. I really enjoyed my Lunker, but the Navigator was way more stable and heavy - same length - different beast.
Enjoy. |
