The Iowa DNR is currently taking public comments and holding public hearings on some very significant changes to the Iowa Code sections impacting fishing and boating. They are looking to define what "bait" is in Iowa and what bait dealers can sell. The proposed language is very limiting and if sent to the legislature in its current form would restrict the use of several popular types of live bait in Iowa. They are also looking to clarify the statute regarding the definition of "hooks" in an attempt to regulate the "Alabama" rig. The proposed language is very vague and confusing. As currently written it will impact several walleye specific rigs (tandem's, sliders, 3 ways) if it is interpreted and enforced in a particular manner. Finally, we are going to see Minnesota like invasive species laws with boat enforcement for empty live wells, bait transportation, plugs out, vegetation on trailers and equipment, etc. I would strongly urge you to go to the DNR web site and familiarize yourself with what is going on. This is a chance to have your voice heard and if we don't, there is a very strong likelihood that we will be involved in a legislative struggle this fall and winter
Best wishes and tight lines,
Dave Nichols
