Boys, we gotta shake the bushes or something here. With almost 700 registered users on this board, we gotta find something more interesting to discuss than what I watched on TV today, or find the deer in the picture. I was excited when I found this board and figured I could go right from the other board to this one absorbing and informing all day long. But this board is petering out fast. If it's the time of year only, I apologize. But if this is the norm, I may have to remove it from my (Favorties list). Maybe I'll start it.....

Does anybody ice fish? Whats everybody favorite technique and with what lure/bait? Any secrets to your technique you wanna share? Heres one of mine. Last year on early ice, I had a lot of fish just come in while I was jigging, look at the spoon and leave. All my buds were having the same thing happen. I started just leaving my spoon motionless as soon as I seen a fish on my FL-8 in the hole. The walleye would slowly swim over and ever so slightly grab the minnow on the spoon. The rod tip would just load up ever so gently, and I'd set the hook with a slow sweep of my hand. Had all my friends scratching their heads for quit a while before I shared my info. There, now that wasn't so bad was it?

Walleye Express, I have one word for you .. Jigging Rapala. It is by far my favorite walleye lure through the ice, and it is deadly in open (cold) weater too, just ask Chief Papineau and Jay Janny! The way is it darts and swings and then comes to a stop it just too much for the fish to take!

I have watched walleyes on camera and through the hole do exactly what you said. When you stop moving the spoon, they swim up and gently take the sppon and minnow, spitting it out if the hook isn't set.

I use summertime style jigging spoons but exchange the treble for a lazer sharp single hook.

Dan,

Lots of guys icefish here. Hopefully, they will visit and post on IceFishingFirst.com, too.

It does tend to get a little slow around here in the fall. Seems as though most of our members are from WI. Traffic is getting better, but not yet up to the levels we had on the original Winnebago Walleyes site when Skeet had it. Unfortunately, when Skeet had to stop monitoring the site, there were some hardware issues, and the site was down for quite a while. WF has been slowly getting alot of these former posters back. Hopefully, as peeps like you join in, the traffic will increase.

That said, I am not associated with WF in any way, other than I know Zach, Steve, and Troy. I came here when they started it up, after a year or so on MuskiesFirst.

As far as your triggering technique on eyes, I will give it a go this winter. One of the things I used to do on Bago, when the icefishing was better on the lake, was to lay my jigging Rapala on the bottom, and use the alarm on my X-3 LCD, set to the bottom foot or 2. When a fish would enter the cone, and set of the alarm, I'd give the jig a rip up off the bottom. Many times, I would get bit. Seemed to be an efficient way, as opposed to jigging all day long with less than stellar results. I'm thinking that the sudden rip of a previously unseen bait triggered the hits.

Dan,

Don't give up too soon on this site! They're the new kid on the block with fantastic ideas. The traffic will grow. They have great ideas that will naturally attract others like yourself.

As Shep indicated, things slow down this time of year. I'm sure that you have noticed the same drastic slow down on Walleye Central. Seems like the same threads stay up without hits on WC for days and days. There was a time when you had to scroll 3 pages to keep up. NO MORE. Take away the NON-fishing threads on WC and you don’t have much traffic any more.

I think your "fix" will be taken care of by visiting both sites on a daily basis, like many of us do now.

I’ve seen some very exciting things happening on this site over the course of just this season. Stay put, you’ll be rewarded.

Meister.

Right you are. The jigging Rapala is a mainstay for me when I'm fishing the Saginaw River. It's darting action combined with the natural current in the river, is perfect for enticing river eye's. Can't say it's been the great lure for me on the Bay that it has been on the river though. I also have used and like the (laying it on the bottom) idea. Sometimes dropping it there when the fish comes in the hole works too. When and if fish are turning away after innitially coming in, try soemthing/anything different while you have their attention. Walleyes and other preditor species often relate when having the sand stirred up, that something is trying to escape from them as they forage along. Good stuff, my scalp is just starting to itch now.

Go to the main page. The daily news is constantly adding fresh stories to the list. Also, get a view of the video. Imagine what this can become in the near future, covering tournaments, fishing events (maybe a clip of Walleye Express in action!), and bet some day it will even rival the fishing shows we see on tv Sunday mornings.

Now to top it off, they just added the World Walleye Ranking to the already busy front page. With more to come, think this will become a very fast happening site very soon.

Stick around Dan!

Dan I've been with this site for a long time back when skeet was runnin things and I was disapointed when it went down, WC got old very fast, The guys here have done an excellent job to this site, the daily news, videos, and especially the people that post, Your right, the views by far out number the amount of posts but as people begin to learn from the things that are posted more will come like yourself, gears are a switchin more towards ice and you will see many of the guys begin posting over there, so don't overlook that either!. As for Jiggin, I ice fish eyes mainly on the local river system and still do better with the traditional round head jig and minnow, The spoons are great on the lakes maybe I'll get an invite this winter to LBDN....hint hint guys!!!
Good Luck

Hi Dan, Nice that you looked in on us. This is a great new site and your professionalism and straight answers can only make it better. Sorry that I missed you down in Huron. Fished with Just Lookn on Sat. previous, but had to go to Ft. Lauderdale on business. Take care and stick around for awhile, I think you'll like what you see.

[b[Tyee.

Just found the icefishingfirst site yesterday and registered there as well. E-mailed Troy about maybe encluding my fishing reports for Saginaw Bay on his site for the winter ice fishing months, but he has a e-mail blocker that intercepted the mail. By the way, always liked your handle. When I first got my Drift Boat back in 1984 I named it the Tyee 1. Do you know what language it is and what it means? I'll see if you can answer it first, before I post the answer.

Dan, Interesting that you brought it up, The name "Tyee" comes from an Indian word that means "great" or "chief." Thats about all I know, can you elaborate more? My boat is a Lund Tyee and I thought that it fit well, but rather than name my vessel Tyee I named it "seemen" after the 3 boys I have although this is a little know secret that my wife came up with. I think you'll find ice first interesting as more and more people learn about it, Last year was the maiden voyage for the site I think and Troy and Zach are workin it hard. I do believe it is one of the first sites of it's kind related to ice fishing. If your having difficulty e-mailing Troy you may want to check your messages for viruses first or post the problem on the site, he monitors it daily!
Good Luck

Board names have always fascinated me. I have a rough time figuring out why some use what they do! I use Ballistic alot on the boards, that coming from my love for hunting and shooting.

Tyee, you are right, IceFIRST is new last year. We are working hard to make IceFIRST as advanced as Walleye FIRST and MukkiFIRST, including videos, events, daily industry news, and much much more. Spread the word!
