Member Posts: 376 Location: Menominee MI, In Da UP Eh? | Okay, So I go hunting this morning. I pull into the turn around off the drive and park. Then the wait of about 1/2 hour to get out and start gettin my hunting duds on. Arriving late like this morning means to sit and wait so any deer that the truck may have alerted or spooked, will allow the deer to settle down. As I am relieving myself beside the truck a noise and some movement catch my eye. (Where better to answer the call of nature than in nature?) Not more than 15 yards away is a yearling buck! Staring right at me!! And he is standing right in the middle of the drive! I slowly finnished up my business and made my way towards the truck. The buck moved on down the road to about 30 yards and stopped. He stood there staring me down. At the closest point he was a mere 25 feet away from me! To grab the cannon was the farthest thing from my mind, though it felt like I could have poked the buck with the barrel of the gun, he was so close! I grabbed the camera and took a few pics. The first ones were kind of blurry as I did not want to move too much so a few photos were snapped, one handed, at arms length, using the viewing pane on the back of the camera. No good as my heart was pounding a mile a minute and I could not steady the camera. Carefully and deliberately I stepped out into the middle of the drive to get a clear photo of him. You see the results here. After snapping a few shots, the thought crossed my mind that he was so close I could not miss with my eyes closed. But I did not want to take a yearling buck. This buck probably wouldn't have been shot by me on the last day of the season either! In amazement I put on my blaze orange and made my way to the blind. Nearing and entering the blind and as I stood watch, the more time that passed, the greater the desire to leave. My heart was not in it. I got too close to the quarry and could not stand to shoot today. That little buck totally deflated the desire to take a deer today. Call me a whimp, but I wanted to be anywhere but there today. Location: Rhinelander | Ralph, Sue got her first deer ever yesterday, after passing a couple. I passed a nice 6, not because I want a huge buck, but because I want to enjoy the rest of the hunt. I know exactly what you mean, some days the kill switch is there to flip, others not.

Member Posts: 61 Location: Westland, MI. | Hey Ralph, Your yearling looks like the one that I passed on opening day. They could have been twins. Steve, tell Sue congrats and I hope Jim and his son are with you enjoying a hunt together. Edited by Bo582 11/23/2003 11:07 AM
