Subject: GPS, Which hand held?

I am in the market for a hand held GPS. I do alot of openwater eye fishing, but MUCH more ice fishing. Seems that a hand held would work really well for finding the holes from a few days ago after a fresh snow on some of the bigger lakes.

Which one should I consider, and why? I can spend about $250.

You want the Garmin Map 76 or 76s if you want more memory. I have used Garmin and Lowrance handheld and in my opinion the Garmin handhelds are the better. You can also load the fishing hotspot maps on these garmin unit. I do like the Lowrance dashmount units better than Garmins, but Garmin makes a better handheld. Plus the 76 is right in your price range. Of course this is just my opinion :).

i use the garmin e-tek and for less than a hundred bucks its well worth it.i use it to find my ice fishing spots. it takes me within two feet every time. it very simple to use also.you can also hook it up to your computer, and store and add waypoints.

Both suggestions that you have received are good ones. It comes down to what options you want. If you want the ability to have lake maps on the unit you're in the right price range. If you just want to get to spot "A" a $100 unit will get the job done and you'll find those holes with no problem.

I use my handheld as a back-up in the boat and find that I like the speed display on it better than my $700 unit. I payed $79 for mine when it was on sale.

Garmin GPS 12 or GPS 12XL is all the machine you'll ever need. For both ice fishing or hot summer locating, the Garmins are the easiest, best user-friendly units you can buy. I bought a mount for my 4 wheeler that I screwed into the Speedometor cluster cap, so it stays right in front of me as I cruse on out to my ice fishing spot. Simply mode over to the Compass arrow setting, and getting back to that hot spot is a breeze. Heading in on the ice after dark? To easy. The internal backlight is adiquate and has never let me down.

I've used the GPS 12 for about 6 years now. Thought I needed a back-up, so I bought the XL to simply have along in case the regular one gave up the ghost. I think I wasted my money. No adverse weather elements ever seems to effect either ones operation. See attached pictures.

That gives you two options. You can retain me for a charter or just show up on a decent day. And if I'm heading out on a fact finding/fun fishing day mission that day, your welcome to tag along and share my shanty for a day. I usually spend the whole day out there. Smoked Deer Brats and beans at noon, or come in and hit the Linwood Hotel for a beer and wet borito.

Thanks for the offer. But if you've looked at my ice fishing page on my web site, you know a Big job is 2 guys and a small job 1. I consintrate totally on getting any of my charter guys fish, rather one or two. And I'm only set up to accomodate two and myself max in the shanty with gear and comfort items. That's why I'll either fish alone on off days or take or tag along with another bud or guest.
