O.K. now that I got your attention, maybe some of you fishing invention types (like myself) can help me out with a solution to a worsening problem I have. If you monitor the other board, you have probably heard me talk about the weed problems while trolling on the Saginbaw Bay, especially after any kind of a blow. I'm trying to invent something/anything that will clear or deviate the floating weeds that catch and work their way down the line to the crankbait while I'm trolling.

Rubber bands and barrel swivels ahead of the cranks eventualy and quickly load up. I thought of simply using a very light bottom bouncer ahead of the crank, as the weeds move along on the bottom of the mainline the current would push them down and away. The smaller weight would (I believe) let the weeds continue to work past it and fall away from the cranks swim path. You think it will work? Also thinking of simply having/making a wire that is squid shaped, with fingers that would move the weeds off the line and away from the cranks swimming path. I have to find something that works better and more efficiently. There are a lot of fish being ignored closer to shore these last 2 years by me because of the weed problems.

Depend on the type of weeds and where you are, but I have not found anything that works very well, or works for more that a few minutes. Frequent checking and cleaning, and running your baits in a way that they are easier to check is the only solution I have found.

Anyone that has fished Big Stone Lake in May and June will know what I am talking about. The best formula I found there was to just abandon the boards and run lead. It easily quadruples your fishing time.

Zach.

These are Hydrilla and CoonTail type weeds that get broken off the parent plant in heavy wind and float suspended in the water column. They catch on your line and work their way down to your crankbait. And I run as many as 10 lines at once in my charter business and going from rod to rod all day is not an option for very long. Same deal with using meat when everything swimming in the Bay eats crawlers. I'm working with another board user on a possible solution to this problem.

Reads like you have alot of good ideas already!

Never had it so bad that the largest (really big ones) brass barrel swivel tied into the line, 3 feet ahead of the bait, couldn't handle.

Rick.

Thats true to a certain degree. The speed beads worked last year when ran ahead of my cranks while using my slider spoon and spoon harness rigs. But even they finally succombed to the sheer ball of weeds that finally builds up and forces the whole thing to the surface.

I used to use a piece of seven strand wire attached to a swivel in the line. Thread it through, and tie it off in a knot, then spin the ends to make a 'burr' out of the wire. One needs clean it regularly, but at least when it needs cleaning the bait is still running!
