Subject: Bank Fishing!

Got away this day - on a fishing adventure - having started with a nasty drive over wet roads, that changed to slippery ice, then deep snow. But it made for a bit of anxiety about the trip and a beautiful lanscape, that together, made this an excellent backdrop for a walleye bonanza!

The direction was plotted by Richfish (if you bankfish, this is your guy!), and along in attendance was Lyubo, both contributors to WalleyeFirst.

And did we catch alot of walleyes! And couldn't even venture a count as to how many. The three of us caught fish the entire afternnoon. And just before dark were catching fish on every cast.

All of the fish landed were smaller males, no doubt because they grabbed the bait before any of their mothers could.

Had a great time with these fellas traveling through the snow, catching a whole bunch of walleyes, and finishing the evening stuffing ourselves at one of the best seafood buffets in the state!

As to the how? A simple rig of two split shots and a size 4 single hook, baited with a small minnow. Then casted out to drift with the rivers current. As to the where? Well, you'll have to get that out of Richfish, he holds the keys to this kingdom!

Let me take a guess on your secret location without giving up too much info.

Lookin' at those great pictures made me rekindle past trips to a similar spot on the Wisconsin River next to where a creek flows in.

Am I close? Looks like you were on the rivers edge?

Rick.

Nice Pictures and Poop. Can't say how many pictures I have of great trips both hunting and fishing where the background showed just how miserable the element were that day. Why is that?

You know what Dan, these are the best of the best times to be outdoors. Maybe its a tough bite, or the quary is all hunkered down. But this is a rare opportunity to have the outdoors to yourself.

My opinion is; it isn't about how many or how big, but about the whole of the experience. Having good conversation surrounded by wild scenery is just so good.

Hi Rick,
Glad you made it home safe.

What Rick forgets to talk about is the first fish of the day he had on.

I see Rick has a fish on, as I look over, I see that his rod is pretty much doubled over.
Not knowing the rod he was using, I asked was it a good one?
Ricks reply...Oh ya.
So I start to watch, instead of fishing.
So there slowly becomes a large shadow in the water at the end of his line.
I reel up quick to go help him with landing it ( no net).
Then the fish becomes visable to me from my higher vantage point.
It is a large walleye,( 5-7lber) white tail spot waving at me.
I am goona get wet tail landing this is in my mind, as I mentally image
myself belly down in the snow arms in the water trying to grab this sucker.
I am about to set my rod down, And Rick setts the hook again, and the hook pops out of the fishes mouth.
The hook was not in the fish.
Oh what a let down.............

But Rick just kept fishing, what a trooper.

I can lead the man to water, but I can not catch his fish for him.

Or can I???

As to the first guess at the spot, not even close.
Sorry.

Rick, we ought to be quiet as Rich got the only keeper on the snow yesterday!!! And this guy has a bag of tricks when it comes to winter attire! And we have to give him credit for the carnage he can do to crab legs and you to stewed scallops LOL - btw did anyone find out what the scallop critter looks like before being sauteed in garlic butter?
Nice being in your company gentlemen and I also regret seeing the lunker go back in the deep after the 2nd set...
Good Luck Fishing To All

Oh yeah baby, eating blue-eyed scallops with Rich and Lyubo!

Hey Lyubo, here is the recipe for herring. The only fish I've been successful with this recipe is suckers and northern pike. Although there may be others that will work, am not sure which.

But anyways, here are the ingrediants:

4 medium sized fish, filleted.
One large onion, sliced.
2 cups of white vinegar.
1/2 cup distilled water.
1 cup of sugar. (if you have a sweet tooth, then have at 'er)
4 tbsp of pickling salt. (the other salt can get bitter)
2 tbsp pickling spices. (and whatever other spice you like)

Wash pint jars throughly with hot soapy water, and as an extra precaution, slowly heat them in a pot of water, until the water is boiling. Then take all the ingrediants, but NOT the fish and onions, and pot them slowly bringing the mix to a boil.

While you wait for this, cut your fish into small 1 inch square pieces, and soak them in a mix of 3 parts cold water and 1 part vinegar for 5 minutes, aggitating the blood and slime from the fish. Flush and rinse the fish. Slice the onions.

Take your jars from the hot water, and place them on a thick towel on your table. Don't burn your fingers so use hot pads! Then pack the fish and onions in the jar in alternating layers.

Pour the pickling mix over the fish until the level is above the contents. Cap the jar and let cool. When cool enough to the touch, place them in the fridge for 5 days, and then you can eat them!

This makes about 5 pints and they will be preserved to eat for 3-4 weeks.
