Finally killed a deer. Just like in the fishing tournament scene, was that pesky Pete that rousted me out of my sleep to go hunting this day. Since having met this character, its almost like I have to have him around to have some luck.

But I do have a bit of a dilema. He also shot at a doe, but didn't drop it on the spot like mine. And we failed to find his deer. So at last light had us discussing who is responsible for breakfast tomorrow, me because of the success, or him for missing the deer?

Think I'll forget my wallet!

We were out yesterday trying to get our first year hunters a shot at a big doe. We made the first drive and pushed 13 deer past the 12 year old hunter and his dad who was sitting with him so he didn't make a mistake and shoot a buck fawn. Evereytime he had a good shot at a big doe a buck from the group of 13 would step in front. We made 2 other drives and pushed a ton of deer but no shot's were fired. I remembered back when I was that age and I did all the walking. Times have changed and the old guys walk for the young guys. Oh well, at least we got Saddam!

The file attached is a great shot of 75 year old "Oly" posing with his first deer in a number of years. We helped to kick it out of a small wood patch and finished it off in the plowed field.

It was really special to see this veteran hunter, cane in hand, come hobbling through the turned cornstalks to gaze on his prize.

Congratulations Oly, Great Job!

Rick.

Congrats Oly... Of all the deer I've harvested through the years with Bow, Shotgun, Rifle and Muzzle loader, it's the Muzzle loader hunts that stick out as the most enjoyable in my mind. Fewer were successful with the smoke pole as the others, but were the ones that I always looked forward to. The absolute solitude of the deep winter woods is a soul cleansing experience. My last trip in the U.P. of Michigan was by far the most beautiful and rewarding.

Sold all my deer harvesting weapons the fallowing year and quit hunting deer alltogether, after my buddy fell to his death from his tree stand. Quiting was something I was contimplating before this, as I've taken probably 100 deer or more during my life. I've always felt both remorse and jubulation after taking a nice deer, and with the added weight of my buds death, I just knew it was time to quit. I know the walleyes weren't to happy to hear I could devote more time to their demise.

I'm attaching two pictures from our last hunt together in Ontanogon. I'm not including his picture as it wouldn't be right if his widow seen them without her permission. He did take both pictures of me with the two bucks I shot on that trip though.
