You can find out a lot about both the bodies of water and techniques used on them, from just reading the Master Angler awards and data given out for the fish caught on them from year to year.

This past years 2003 entries tells me quit a bit about my home waters of Saginaw Bay. Seems the evenings are better than mornings and the Sweedish Pimple (My buddies Favorite), and not my Do-Jigger is indeed the best ice fishing lure used to catch Big walleyes on the Bay.

Of course neither I or any of my clients last year, (as far as I know) applied for any M/A awards with the 5 or 6 qualifiers we iced last winter, or any boated during the summer season on the Bay. And I immagine a lot of others go unreported throughout the year as well.

At the lodge I work at I often see that certain groups have their favourite lures, and will use them all the time. I once had a guest ask me why we weren't using bottom bouncers since all the people he had talked to had caught their big fish on those. But all those other people ever used was bottom bouncers so of course that's what they caught fish on. I think your list is useful, but maybe more fish came on Sweedish Pimples simply because more people use them. Maybe consider what this data tells you about the people factor too. Maybe lots more fish in the evening then in the morning, etc...

Stewert.

Your right of course. There may be many other variables that prove or disprove what your eyes and the data shows. I will comfirm the fact that more people do indeed fish the Bay during the evening hours, as some get out of work in time and live close enough to do so. This would of course add to the afternoon catch rate data. If I was personally asked about my best times, it would be from daylight to 11:00am, with some fish thrown in after 4:00pm. But you have good insight and a good post.

That's really interesting that you do best with a lure and time that isn't part of what is shown to be best by the master angler list. I hope I didn't come across as snarky on my post. Very little inflection in print ;). I don't know how it is on the Bay, but on my homewaters the people factor is one of the most important factors to consider. For example, orange is not a good colour since everyone uses orange, but if you asked someone orange is what they would tell you to use. It used to be really good, and the force of habit has outlasted the peak effectiveness. Anyways, it's just gotten so that you have to study the people as much as the fish here and a master angler list says much about people.

You make the point that you yourself don't bother entering your masters, and I think most really good fishermen don't. Like my girlfriend says, "The quietest piggy eats the most" :).

Right-on again Stewert.

And I took nothing you said harshly. I know for a fact, I caught 3 walleyes over 10 pounds last winter. 10 pounds is the qualifying weight. And two of my clients caught two others. I released all of mine after a picture, and they took theirs home to be mounted. I don't see any data that's going to make me change from the winning combination I myself have proven reliable. But I sure like looking at it, especially if I may be planning a trip to that area.

Well, Thank you Risor.

Might have got this temperment and insight from Guiding/Chartering for 20 years and running the Bait/Sports Shop I owned for 4 years. I've squeezed a lot of differnt experiences into my 51 years of life. Fishing has been a major part of my life and truly is the only continually learning vocation, and keeps a man young measuring up to it's challenges.

I think you can look at the month most were caught. Not first ice like alot of people would you to believe. You also have to look at the skill level of the angler and I`m sure some were just luck. Great post lots of info. Fish On
