I've tried these hooks a few times with limited success, mostly with harnesses, and a little with rigging. I was wondering how many of you have tried these hooks and if you have, what your thoughts were about them and if you don't mind sharing, what applications did you use them in?

Thanks in advance for your input.

i`ve tried them rigging and really found them to be no different.they say you dont have to set the hook .i generally dont snap my rods to drive hooks home.rigging i load up the rod by sweeping it away from the fish.plus i give the fish time to take the bait down its throat.so all in all i found no real advantage useing them

I have tried them and will continue using them while guiding and using lindy rigs. As advertised, almost every fish is caught in the corner of the mouth. I'm still a little skeptical on their hooking %, so while tournament fishing I'll stick to my standard rig for now.

One thing that I have discovered is that you need to go up at least one size if not two from the hook you normally use. This helps with hook ups.

I normally ise a #6 Gami for most of my rigging when using leeches and moved up to a #2 circle for that and my harnesses. Strange thing was, many times I'll have a fish on and fighting, then the next thing I know, they are gone. Seems they weren't holding the fish very well. Pulling a harness with the rod in the holder should be the perfect use for these hooks, but I have lost too many fish I've had on trying it that way. Some people I've talked to think they work better with those types of fish that crush their food, as opposed to catching and swallowing it. Namely your ocean fish, like Permit, Sheepshead, Catfish, Tarpon, ect..

Jack,

I have not tried them with leeches.

So far, the best luck that I have had was when I was using them with large redtails, tail hooked.

While guiding, it has been dificult to re-educate people about not setting the hook and loading up the rod instead. For some reason, people also think that it is a replacement for quick strike rigs, which it obviously is not.

I will continue to use them when I fish with redtails and I will use them more when I have a deadstick out while jigging or casting with another rod.

Question for ya'.......... do you use noodle rods or deadstick rods?

I've seen them well work well willow cat fishing, but not well enough to get me to switch from what I normally use.

Rigging, I use a 8400 Loomis IMX. For blades, I use the Loomis walleye series 6'9" bottom bouncer rod. It has a #3 tip, so it is fairly stiff.
Now I have to say, I have not tried them with any type of minnow, mainly because about the only time we use minnows on Mille Lacs is in the winter ice fishing. I do sometimes pull minnows on blades in the summer, but when I do, it is usually small Dace minnows, which aren't much bigger than a crappie minnow. Are you thinking my rods might be loading up too fast and not allowing them to get the hook in deep enough?

The true circle hooks are designed to be used without a real hookest. You are supposed to just reel until the hook sticks in the corner of the mouth, at least that is what I was taught in the salt water. Circle hooks are real popular in saltwater fishing. The hooking percentage is very high, too.
