| If the lower fin on the bottom of the lower unit is broke off, will the motor still perform okay? Not even sure what the bottom fin is even for. It's a Yamaha 90 hp. I've been power loading my boat for 25 years with never any problems but tonight I was loading it up at Jefferson, and when I got home I noticed the fin was broke off and the prop was all messed up. Slightly very upset as this has never happened to me. Same prop for 25 years, and do have a new one that was my spare but aluminum. Can these props that get damaged be fixed? The motor was trimmed up like always and I don't usually use Jefferson landing so this really ticks me off. Should I keep using the motor or should it be fixed and what kind of $$ to fix it? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank-you.  |

| You can get a new skag welded on, check with a prop repair shop. You may lose some control at high speeds. |

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | The skag, the propellers generated torque and thrust, along with the boats keel bottom, are all part of the stabilization of the boat when on the water. I have an outboard Jet Motor on my flat bottom Smoker Craft that never had a lower end gear box or skag to begin with. In fact the impeller intake box and screen are just about even with the bottom of the boat when in operation. The boat is steered at both low and high speeds by the conversion and thrust of the water being sucked in and then pushed back out the back. But the boat is slower to respond to the helm, slides out on turns and takes some getting used to. This point alone, I think would spell disaster on any boat with any kind of a pointed or tapered keel bottom. Best to fix the skag and prop before running it again, or the temptation to run fast produces some sad surprises.

| Thanks for the feedback. I have put a new prop on allready and will see how the boat rides before I think of getting a new piece welded back on. |
