Not sure what learned fishing theory your grandpa was sighting when he suggest small hooks for walleyes when using tip-up's, but I agree with him. Not being the biggest tip-up fan myself, I've still used them pleanty of times. Live bait is almost always used when using tip-up's and the preditor fish (whatever it is) has lots of time to circle, watch and taste your live minnow offering as he struggles on the line before moving in for the BIG SWALLOW. When using this technique, the only time you know you have anything on is when they have actually commited, have taken in the bait and hook, and have started to swim off. He may have taken it in and spit it back out several times before actually deciding to eat it. Having smaller hooks gives it less chance of being detected by the fish. My favorite sizes are 10's and 12's mustad trebles. Edited by walleye express 1/23/2004 1:36 PM

Some love the body bait/lure types, like the Jigging Rapala and Salmo Chubby Darters, while others like only the spoon types. I'd put myself in the latter category, even though I carry a good supply of each. My very favorite spoon is the Do-Jigger fallowed closely by a local built favorite called the warrior spoon. In my neck of the woods, walleyes seem to favor one type over the other depending on where your fishing. Saginaw River/Body types. Saginaw Bay/Spoons.
