The weather is very good for March 29 in Spring Valley Il as the Masters Walleye Circuit kicks off the 2014 season with the Spring Valley 'artificial lures only' tournament. Temps are supposed to be in the 40's today and hit near 60 tomorrow, with river levels good and the bite reported to be excellent. Water temps are at 42 degrees. The MWC website shows 85 teams competing.

Good Luck to all participating. I would be there for festivities but I am laid up for awhile. I guess better now then later where I have more choices as to were I can go fish. Hope there are plenty of fish to go to the hatchery.

Scott Rhodes and Jeff Koester lead the Spring Valley MWC with 14-06 weighing in a mixed bag of saugers and walleyes. Second place is held by Barry O'Flynn and Corey Blair basketing 12-09.

In third place are Kevin O'Malley and Rick Parrott with a bag weighing 12-05. Fourth are Heath Bowman and Gordy Powers with a total on the leaderboard of 12 pounds even.

Perennial top ten finishers Barb and Danny Plautz round out the top 5 teams with 11-14.

60 teams limited today requiring over 10 pounds to make the top 20. The weights overall were up dramatically from last year, and should nearly double for the top 20 teams after day two if the bite holds up. Last year's top weight was 18-15. Rhodes and Keostar weighed in 14-06 today.

Comments from the anglers onstage indicate the 'artificial lures only' format has solid support, and if today's successes were any indication, the overall catch rate will not be effected at all and will actually improve dramatically from last year's tough fishing.

Berkley, a Pure Fishing company well known for innovation developing soft plastics, scents, crankbaits, and top shelf walleye gear kicked in an additional $2500.00 toward the payouts, adding additional incentive to embrace the concept of catching 'em on artificials.

Stand by for day two, the forecast looks great and the bite should improve.
