I'm going to bet you that I have not put 100 miles on the trailer that hauls my Grady White charter boat around since I bought the boat 7 years ago. At that time, I had all 4 tires along with the wheel bearings replaced with brand new ones. But last spring when I brought it home for the boats spring cleaning and set-up, I noticed the tires were severly weather checked.

The tire tread is like brand new, but the side walls had more deep cracks than My 89 year old Grandpa's face before he passed away. Is this a serious problem that I should be concerned with? Somebody told me to first silicone and then put some black shoe polish on them, to put some moisture back in the rubber to stop the weather checking. Should I trust these tires, even though they are not put to any prolonged highway use?

Dan- dry rotting (weather checked) tires will do this from just sittng around with little use. I had this happen to my spare tire on the trailer and had to use it one day. I didnt trust it to far so I drove45 mph all the way home (20 miles) and nothing happened. I don't know if I would travel with them to far, just make sure you have a back up plan in case they both go out on the same trip. From what I have been told was to store tires off the trailer in a dark moist place and this won't happen.

are you still meeting rick to fish on tuesday? i e-mailed him to find out the time and place to meet up, but have'nt heard from him yet. i think he's on the ice somewhere else and has'nt been able to get to a 'puter. anyway, the reason i ask is he could bring a set of good used ones with him for cheepies. for the amount of use you put on that trailer any old auto tire with some tread will due just fine. remember, rick is the king of used tires. send him the size you need and he could hook you up.

Kinda forgot what business Rick was in. I only plan on meeting Rick on the day or after he gets done fishing Tuesday or on Wednesday before he heads back home. I plan on hitting St.Lukes Bay Ontario again Monday for some more giant perch. My bud called me from the ice this morning, had 25 slabs by 10:30am and said he had 2 perch about 15 inches that were curled at both sides of a 6 gallon pail. I gotta get back there for one more go-round. I fried some that next day and the wife told me to take two days next time. She loved them.

I'd like to meet with you guys at the Linwood Motel of the Village Inn in Linwwod, if you come in for lunch on Tuesday or after you get off the ice Tuesday night. If you get a hold of Rick, tell him to call me on that number I gave him and leave his cell number. I can call the marina from anywhere and have them give me the particulars off those weather checked tires. I'd get back with him and have him grab 4 new ones or used if there was time before he left to come here.

Unfortunately, that cracking is a result from either the ultra violet rays from the sun, or underiflation. So the next set of tires, kep the air up and cover them.

Otherwise, you had better change them tires. The suspension on your boat trailer is lacking and it is the tire that takes all the abuse from the road, coupled with the weakness in the sidewalls, this may cause the tires to blow!

As jake has mentioned, I do sell used tires (but mostly wholesale) and would be happy to help you out by bringing a set over when I visit. No charge of course! Igotplanstohearalotfromyou:-)

However, it looks like this week is a bust for a trip over. My emergency brakes are out in the ol' chev and need to have them fixed as it is a stick shift. Hopefully I can get over there next week and will call you tomorrow to let you know whats up with me!

Can't wait to meet you in person. Guess the only thing worse than knowing you have bad rubber is actually using and trusting bad rubber. Ya know, that's the same thing my dad told me when I asked him where I came from.

Like Rick has said. Probably from the sun. When you get the new/replacement tires, kepp them aired to the max, and also keep them covered from the sun. RV places have covers you can buy, or you could make your own. Give Rick a shot upside for me when you see him! hehehe
