New User Posts: 3 Location: de pere, wisconsin | It is the responsibility of each person to decide if the ice is safe. My decision to go out on small lakes is generally determined when I check the shoreline and decide if it will hold up until I get off. Also, staying away from stream and river inlets. Is Winnabago the same? COMMON SENSE IS LEARNED FROM EXPERIENCE. What factors do experienced WINNABAGO fisherman use to determine if the ice is safe for travel? Do all fishing clubs check and close their roads when they determine it is unsafe?

| 2 inches new ice is alot stronger than 12 inches of old ice. I remember a trip as a younster when my grandfather walked out on 20 inches of ice to determine its saftey. The weather was wet and warm like its been this week and he was being cautious. Amazingly, one foot broke through the soft honeycombed ice. We went back home to Manitowoc (from Winnebago), with gramp's wet foot to show for the trip over! | |||

As far as right now goes, I wouldn't be surprised if the decision is made to pull our bridge this weekend. We have some warm weather coming and there is a lot of water standing on the ice. Combine that with tough working conditions and the price of the bridge and it's pretty much a no brainer to pull it. If I had a four wheeler and really wanted to fish I would go. It's just too darn hard to avoid the slush hole with a truck. Be Careful.
